Backwoods Savage sorry I didn't do a search before putting up a thread on the MS 170. I've asked Scotty if he can merge the two. Hope you don't mind.

You lose power, same as any other exhaust system.

Would it give bad trigger response and end up killing? Would it mimic a bad carb?

It just seemed gutless when it got plugged. Read about the screen on one of the forums or the Book of Destruction, checked it and it needed cleaning. Maybe check it every gallon or two of gas. It doesn't take long, just two nuts.

Got the 170 from a local friend ( retired maritime skipper ) who who was not comfortable with it.
Other than an oil pump and non safety ( 050 ) 14" chain over 6 years, it's a nice reliable saw for brush and heavy blowdowns on trails.
It is light.....enough that you can one hand it.

Thank you. It makes more sense to put all this wonderful information in one place. I'll definitely be adding the MS170 to my arsenal. I love the MS291. It's a good reliable saw. With the addition of the MS170, I'll swap out the 18" bar for 20" bar. That way I'll have a more capable larger saw and the versatile 16" smaller saw.

The 170 usually comes with a bumper safety chain.
When the original chain wore out, I changed to a 14" 3/8 non safety and bar ; big difference in cutting small stuff now.

I'd also recommend staying with the narrow kerf bar and chain (3/8- .043). Allows the saw to work more like a fillet knife....lol

I agree. The only bad thing I have noticed is that the narrow kerf wears out a whole lot faster, but still worth it.

I like the narrow kerf. Doubt it'll get enough use to wear one out, but a very handy saw for sure. I used it on that cherry picker job and it was perfect.

I should have stated, the chain; not the bar.

I saw this post back in April. In early May I went to the Stihl dealer here in town and picked up a MS170 at the sale price. $203 out the door for the saw, a six pack of Stihl Ultra 2 stroke oil (doubled the warranty) a three pack of chain files and a gallon of Husky bar oil, and of course sales tax.

I went out at lunch and grabbed this red oak with it. Very handy for quick scrounges. [IMG]

Now get a Pferd/Stihl/Husky 2 in 1 hand chain sharpener FOR YOUR SPECIFIC CHAIN.
All you need to keep the 170 going right. Tough to start with Oak.
