I sort of maintain that the temperature readings will be higher if the flue runs horizontal vs vertical. Am I nuts? It just seems to me that when running horizontally, the hottest point would be right along the top of that pipe whereas on a vertical, the hottest would be more in the center. In addition, it would seem that the horizontal would heat a bit faster. Again, am I nuts? Well, okay, my wife insists that I am so that is covered well.
Makes sense to me. One reason horizontal pipe slows (is a choke) to draft is the higher temps are at the top , lower temp at the bottom & create some turbulence. Heat rises, it don't go side ways , forcing it to go sideways is lost draft efficiency
I have 2 Probes. One on my Horizontal and one on my Vert. And yes, the horizontal is higher. So you may be nuts Dennis, but maybe not as nutty as you think (still o.k. In my book ) Never took a pic of the upper probe, but I will now. May be until tomorrow before I post. So someone remind me. Pics, or it never happened.
Guess you're not nuts when it comes to this, Dennis. Good that Dex proved your point. Common sense is a not such a common thing to have.
Your not anymore nuts than the rest of us Dennis. I have a 45 coming directly off my flue collar and if I take my IR gun around the top of it the hottest reading is the top front while the underside reads much cooler.
Same here on the tee take-off from my rear-vent Keystone; Top reads much higher than the bottom, and less than the vertical portion of the tee.
