Hey Larry, question please? What does the pneumonia shot protect against, viral? Can a vaccinated one still get bacterial pnuemonia from the flu?

ex wife talked me into getting one back in mid 70's, when they first started this- we both got sick as h with flue within a couple days- never had flu/ reaction? like that ever before. Never had one since- haven't had the flu either and that includes raising 3 youngsters with all the xyz brought home from school. plus all kinds of contact with other people.

I ams sending you a quote that explains your question. Hope this helps.
"It's not really the "pneumonia vaccine". That name is an unfortunate bit of "dumbing-down". There are two pneumococcal vaccines that protect against pneumococcal infections -- i.e., infections caused by pneumococcus bacteria, a.k.a. Streptococcus pneumoniae. These bacteria can cause pneumonia as well as meningitis, sinusitis and ear infections.

There are a lot of different strains of S. pneumoniae. The PCV13 (Prevnar) vaccine protects against 13 strains, and the PPSV23 (Pneumovax) vaccine protects against 23 of them.

There are other bacteria besides pneumococcus that cause pneumonia, and as you have noted there are certainly pneumonias caused by viral infections (e.g. influenza... which is why, get the damm flu shot people!). There are even fungal pneumonias, which are uncommon in immunocompetent individuals, but not unheard of.

So... the vaccines protect against the most common disease-causing strains of S. pneumoniae.

The CDC website has a lot of info about these vaccines: VPD-VAC/Pneumo/main page"

My mother also a RN told me same thing!! I am NOT saying the FLU shot gave me the FLU.. it made me as sick as a dog!! At 17, stepped on nail got a tetanus booster, Allergic to that too. :headbang:I understand the virus is dead and cannot give you flu but no where can I find what they put in it!

I think some are sensitive to the stuff in the shots, and don't feel good. Then a DR. says its not possible to get flu from shot! OK but is it possible to make you sick! Also in today's world there is a bunch of cry baby crisis.. Huge difference between a sensitivity and anaphylactic shock.. (Thats where your heart goes into unsteady rhythm and air tubes close causing breathing difficulties)

Most vaccines are made with eggs. So if you have an egg allergy it could give you problems.

bogieb .. My severe allergy is fish.
They don't recommend it but I've taken little bits of tuna to build a tolerance.

No need for a flu shot when you use essential oils ...

    Just kidding,

I've never had a flu shot and likely won't unless things change. I rarely if ever get sick so no need IMHO. I feel being exposed to things naturally strengthens your immune system, and trust me, my wife is a preschool teacher and ran a home day care for years so we were exposed to everything. I do understand the need for people with weakened immune systems and seniors.

There was some controversy here a few years back when they made front line health workers (EMS, nurses, lab tech, etc) get the flu shot but it was not mandatory for doctors to get the shot....and most doctors were not getting the shot. Why is that? I have read the hype for flu shots was started by the pharmaceutical industry :zip:
