I kicked my houseplants outside today. They get shade against the house, and we have a couple of cloudy days coming, so I hope they won't get sunburned. Also potted up some annuals, the petunias were freebies, culls from HD where my friend works.
Crabapple is on the cusp of blooming this morning. Looks like it will be in full bloom during rain (starting now and going until Tuesday ). .
Mom has one trillium blooming in her garden. She has no idea how it got there. Is the flower bright yellow? It is hard to tell in the picture.
Skunk cabbage is sort of a purple bloom. Many would say they never bloom but they say that about Maple trees too. I was looking at the Hickory tree in the yard today and it appears to be loaded with blooms meaning a lot of nuts come fall. Al
Our skunk cabbage have a bright yellow bloom. They are mostly over by now. The squirrels really like the center stalk a little later in the season.
Has anyone planted a wildflower mix into a grassy area without tilling in? I have two areas I am considering turning into a meadow area and letting the grass grow long. I'd like wildflowers to grow, but I don't want to dig up the grass. I'm thinking of sowing, watering in and spreading loam on top. I'll see what is available at the box store.
I found this British website about creating a wildflower meadow How to create a wildflower meadow in your garden- Eden Project, Cornwall This was an American site but I don't think it really is what you want. Wildflower Seed Planting Instructions
Thank you Woodwidow. The second site was really good. It looks like the areas I had in mind are not really suitable as they are a bit shaded and full of grass. The plants need a lot of sunlight and little competition from grasses and weeds. I have two areas by the house that may work well. I picked up seed last night and will prep this weekend. Deer may eventually be a problem, so this is rolling the dice. I'll post picks of the prepped areas. Here is what I picked up.
