Chud, Do you have issues with deer eating the persimmons and what size would you say the fruit is? Golf ball/tennis ball size? I planted some of these in zone 5 last year and am curious about growth and fruit expectations. I'm considering 24 more this year if I can convince myself the outcome may be favorable.
Deer love Persimmons. Native Persimmons are golf ball size. You need male and female trees close to get a massive fruit set. They get so loaded some limbs will break.
Thanks. I'll have to look into this m/female thing. I just ordered them from a local nursery and they didn't mention it. I planted them smack in the middle of deer country, but caged them as cattle also graze that area. The tops of all my cages are smashed in, but I assumed the cattle may have contributed. With no fruit, I can't imagine the deer were interested in a stick with leaves.
Pretty as it is, it still is a little scary those look great all scattered through the trees. Did you plan all of them or did they just expand from the original plantings?
I did not plant them and they have expanded. There are some really old plantings nearby that are carpeting the ground. If I remember I’ll get pics next week.
It looks like Paw Paws will be blooming 3 weeks earlier than last year and a month earlier than when I started manually pollinating them.
About the only flowers blooming up here are snowdrops and what Mom calls Christmas roses. Crocuses and daffodils are starting show above ground though. Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose)
Just checked the paw paw grove. Nothing yet. The fruit isn't ready in these parts until mid october or so.
