The tree hydrangea only looks good from one side as the other side is too shady. Of course the side that only has leaves is the part visible from the back porch.

Can you get clematis that bloom in different seasons? I think when I was yanking out honeysuckle from Mom's yard, I pulled out her clematis as well. The honeysuckle of course was taking over and hiding the clematis.

Most clematis bloom in the early and mid summer, have large showy blooms and may have two blooming periods. Sweet Autumn (aka Clematis Paniculata) only blooms in late summer and the flowers aren't nearly as large or pretty. However, it does have a nice scent and can get really large once established. At my previous house we had a 6' fence that the Sweet autumn climbed over and spread out to at least 10' wide (and using other shrubs to spread further) - and that was after cutting it all down to get control of it.

Ben warm and wet. Most impressive is that it doesn't show any of the Maple Tar Spot on any of the leaves. The cr*p maples out back are loaded with it because of the hot, humid, wet weather over the last couple of months.

From the kitchen table. Yesterday’s wind and rain took quit a few leaves.

I hadn’t seen this thread before. There are some gorgeous flower pictures!

October Glory has really hit its stride. Pic from today:

Autumn Blaze is taking its time, but is getting a good turn of color

Comparison of the two trees. October Glory is below and Autumn Blaze in the foreground. The red behind the Autumn Blaze is from the burning bush that started turning a couple of weeks ago, then stopped right there.

As a comparison these are the scrub maple in the back yard. Yeah, mostly bare - 2 weeks ago you could barely tell that garage was there and couldn't see the vehicles or street at all.

Those two maples are really going to be big in a few years. And gorgeous in the fall.

I hope so. A huge old willow used to be there and it shaded 1/2 the house pretty well from the southern sun. This summer was brutal inside since the willow isn't there anymore.

Color is not as far along as last year. Still a greenish tinge to the red maple

I didn't know that crocus bloomed in autumn - I thought spring only.

Colchicum autumnale. Not true crocuses but they look similar. Some of them are really spectacular ( these are off the web).
    _DSC1233.JPG
Plant them in early fall, it's OK if the bulbs have already sprouted (like old onions). Then just forget about them.
