One of my creeping phlox has been blooming for several days. The phlox the next tier up is a different color, and gets more shade so it just had flower buds, but it should be going next week. I'm leaving the dandelions for the bees - which I saw a huge bumblebee yesterday. Some of the "weeds" in my lawn are starting to think about blooming too (wild violets and strawberry). After the snow today melts, I'll need to remember to remove my boundary stakes.
They get pretty massive. Looks like a tree with branches, if they are left to grow. They take energy from the plant, instead of producing more ribs, or storing for next year.
For some reason, I didn't realize they flower. They do look cool, although if you want more food, I guess you gotta get rid of them.
Pictures I took in the middle of the week of perinials A bunch of Tahiti Narcissus (Daffodils). I have two different bunches in the roadside garden and they really draw the attention Baby Lupines from seeds gathered at Well Seasoned 's last fall. This is in the semi-shade garden between the house and the swamp. I have several Peonies starting to greet the spring, but Madam Emile D is looking the furthest along so far in the roadside garden. And of course the Hyacinths right next to it are very aromatic
Lupine seeds have sprouted. There were a few slugs around them this morning. The lupine's I put in a few weeks ago trapped some water on the leaves and were pretty neat. The spruce next to the house set some cones. I was surprised how bright they were. I'll plant the hummingbird and butterfly flower seed next to the house this weekend.
I'd really like to grow more of these. There are many out back that bittersweet and disease did them in. I have maybe two healthy ones, this is the nicest one. Birds love to roost and nest in it.
Pictures from today Found more baby lupines from Well Seasoned's seeds. These are in the roadside garden. This area may, in the end, be too dry for them, but we'll seee The daffodills, peony foliage and sedum (far right) are sheltering the baby lupines Creeping phlox at the stairs is not yet as nice as it will be, but close. More are past the stairs, but they are shaded by the huge rhodies, so they are at least a week behind. Oh yeah, and the hosta is coming up nice (as are the two dandelions )
The new "Prairie fire" crabapple all blossomed out. Almost flourescent. The "Indian summer" across from it is not as showy, but it looks to be similar as the large one in the side yard.
