Gardening Flowers & Foliage

The picture quality is terrible as it’s zoomed way in, but these are the flowers on top of Connecticut’s tallest (that I know of) wild surviving American chestnut tree, at about 65’. I found this tree almost 5 years ago. Unfortunately the blight has finally found it too, so it’s just a matter of time before it dies back to the root system once again. With any luck I can beat the squirrels to a few of this tree’s crop of chestnuts this fall. Who knows how much time it has left.

Beautiful sight. Yeah that’s your rare backyard variety American chestnut. Great to see it flowered this year!

 

Originally, I had misidentified the Chestnut as Hickory.

My pics today are from sprouts around the original stump. I should give them another thinning and let the strongest have the space.

 

The gladiolus that we got in Holland MI this year have started blooming, of course they are tall and needed staking. I thought about bamboo, but we have plenty of 1/2" pipe and zip ties, Miz Carol had some knee hi's that she doesn't wear anymore. A country boy put his on and came up with a reusable idea.


I also needed her other little spot by the road...

 

Other than a cucumber plant a friend gave me, no garden this year unfortunately. At least a couple of the apple trees are producing.

Waaaaay behind on weeding. Weather is the big factor.

 

I see pretty flowers beds

 

I love this Firebush in my backyard, this shrub attracts hummingbirds like a magnet. I planted a total of six plants over the last couple of years and been very pleased with the results.

 

I was actually weeding and was surrounded by bee balm. The pink blooms are smaller than the red. I do see hummingbirds darting among the blooms

 

I’ve been broadcasting goldenrod seeds on the edge of my backyard woods every fall for a couple years now. Nice to see it starting to get established. I wish there was more sun here, but it’s nice to see that there’s just enough to get some native wildflowers going. When I first bought this house, all that was growing over here was a thick dark forest of maple saplings. Now it’s full of goldenrod and native asters.

Knothead, our Fire bush is a green bush with like red Holly berries that leaves turn red in the fall like maple leaves. Deep red they are considered invasive here. So cannot be purchased anymore
