On the deer herd causing the ticks. I highly doubt that. We used to have many more deer here than we do now and did not ever see a tick. We do see a few now but very few, thankfully.

On the Thermacell, the first time I used one I was amazed. I was stacking wood! Was late that year and wanted to get the wood stacked before the skeeters hatched. They hatched big time before I got the wood stacked. A hot and humid day I was trying to stack and kept slapping then remembered I had bought a Thermacell. Went in house to get it, laid it on the ground close to where I was stacking. Within a couple minutes, I was down to a t-shirt on top and no slapping. I was sold! Would not be without one now for sure.

We have not tried one of those lanterns but have only the hand held units. No holster. If walking, I just stick one in my back pocket. It works.

pop. here in Mass growing. hunting not what it used to be. with leash laws dogs no longer allowed to roam, common to see small herds in neighbors yards early am. Lyme's out here moving pretty rapidly. still more coastal than 100-150 mi inland. Nantucket it is out of control. wish they had an advantics for us folks. http://yesterdaysisland.com/ticked-off-on-nantucket050720151234/

That's good to know that they have been backwoods tested.
Lots of times when I want to go outside I just don't, because of the mosquitoes, I sometimes spray myself down but I do not care for that much. The Thermacell sounds like a pretty good alternative
I had one of these it worked a little but not very well

I remember a few years ago when an outdoor writer came to do some scouting in a woods I was controlling at the time. We met there and I took along an extra thermacell for him but he preferred his spray. All the way around and through the woods he was slapping and applied spray 3 times. I never got bit.

Want to get a thermacell lantern for the patio and to hang on the golf cart when we're up in the woods. At first I balked a little on buying one because of the refill cost, but I found some mods that look like they'd work for butane and pad refill. Went to 3 different stores today and couldn't find the lantern type, only the handheld one. Guess I'll have to order it online.
