I haven't yet, mostly because I'm cheap. I want to but I guess I've been waiting for something free to turn up. This is only my 2nd year in the house. I did find a good size roll of black vinyl aphostery fabric in the garage - the previous owner was into antique car restoration. It's probably enough to top cover both of my stacks. Think that'll work?
I think that if it keeps the rain off your stacks it will work. One suggestion I have is to get some plywood on top also. I have a collection of plywood scraps that I use under the my tarps. The flat surface helps quite a bit, it is easy to get the roof pitched and cuts down on puddles and can make it easy to get a bit of an overhang and keep the wood better protected. Every time I come across a scrap bigger than about 2' square or a long foot wide piece I grab it.
Welcome to the forum Shawn. It might work but then, the vinyl very well could crack from the cold and wet of winter. Some have had some luck using tarps if plywood is placed between the tarp and the wood. We use old galvanized roofing that we scrounged. It works great as you can see below. Also, we split and stack in early spring but don't top cover until November or December. Usually around December 1. Then we leave it for 3 years or more before burning it. This has worked extremely well for us and others. About the longest we've left it in the stack was 8 years but that wood (mostly ash, soft maple, elm and cherry) really burned sweet!
Nice - looks like you piled it higher in the middle to shed water? You know - I just demo'ed my old mobile home. Tossed a 40'x17' trailer worth of tar-covered galvanized into the dumpster. Saved the floor joists though - they're only about 16' now but I should have plenty to build a couple lean-to's on 2 sides of my garage.
Yes, the center higher works well but I usually don't go quite that high. Or if one end is lower than the other, no need to raise the center. Too bad about that old roof. That probably would have worked out nicely although you'd have to do some cutting. But, here is another covering that perhaps others could scrounge. Thanks for posting that.
