I keep an extinguisher in the bedroom. It was after reading a post here about not keeping it close to the stove. If the stove needs extinguished, your extinguisher is in/near the fire!

Given the position of the cat, and the heavy steel plate (the 'radiator') on top of it, it is really amazing that the front of the stove is the hottest spot externally. It must be the cat's heat output radiating onto the front plate of the stove? Just looking at the 'innards', it would see that the spot just behind and above the radiator exit would be the hottest spot. Thanks for passing this info. along- when I get mine in I will pay attention to that and now of course, curiosity has the better of me. :)

this would be me for the first few weeks once I get a stove. My wife's childhood home burned down so I know for sure she would be on edge, which in-turn would make me on edge. Well hopefully its another safe burning season for everyone here!

BrianK may be able to explain the part that produces the ringing noise and why. I'll get a video that includes the bell noise the next time I burn and post it for you Ray.

Folks with the production model Ideal Steel have been commenting on the "ringing bell" sound during warm up. I have not heard it yet since I have not yet installed my production model Ideal Steel. My Beta IS stove had a bimetallic coil that controlled the metal cover over the pre-cat ("tertiary") air intake, that did not function reliably. The production models use a simpler design with a bimetallic strip to open and close the pre-cat air intake cover.

Lorin from Woodstock commented about it on another thread:

    Ideal Steel Hybrid Owners-
The metal fluttering sound that you may have heard on warm-up is the bimetallic, tertiary air strip located at the back of the stove. At start up, it is possible for the bimetallic strip to flutter against the back plate until it is warmed up enough to open fully. We heard this occasionally in our lab and shop but we didn't feel it warranted a design change. If you feel we are wrong, please let us know.

Not a cat owner but all of us who burn wood have had bad dreams, woke up and ran to the stove. Thankfully, 40 years of Burning wood, I've never had an issue. Some scares and close calls but my house is still standing and it is still warm.

You know how many times I used to get up ( or not fall asleep) back when I had an open hearth with glass doors - every time I had a fire.
Back when I ran the propane furnace(been 5years ago) I'd hear that sucker "boom" into action and it sets up in the eve space - far away from me seeing anything and no smoke detector in there either.

Pretty sure I about killed myself from CO poisoning after waking up disorientated on the couch with the open hearth burning and the draft causing issues from the propane furnace.

It barely crosses my mind with the stove loaded solid when I go to bed now

I love that about Woodstock! What a great job they do. So while you are talking to Tom about air control settings and markings. There are only 2 small things I don't like on the PH. One is the difficulty cleaning the glass behind the andirons, and the other is the non-mechanical and non-marked air control. By non-mechanical I mean, it's just a willy-nilly infinite slide control up and down, and it has no markings or reference really. So it's hard to get an exact setting, and/or duplicate it exactly. I'd like to see them make it more of a "mechanical" control (geared type control), with something like 10 or 20 detents or clicks in it. That way you can set it at #5, or #2..... and always duplicate it...

That's a GREAT point! My wife is always a bit nervous when I load the stove and we go out to dinner or something... She worries and says "there is an open fire in there!". I always remind her, we have had an "open fire" in the oil furnace for 15 years, and you never worried about that! And the fire in the furnace is worse, you can't see it or know what is really going on in there!! At least I can see the fire in the wood stove, and I see what's going on in it.
