Unless they are calibrated probaby neither of them! Just handy to know if there is a big dfference in them. Might be able to check them in an oven but there again you dont really know how accurate that is.

That's where a IR hand held comes in handy. But if the gauges are relatively close, that's good enough for a quick glance to see what the temp is doing.

The reading just has to be reasonably accurate. 50 degrees plus minus isn't a big deal but 100 would be.

This is all I use. Why use anything else eh? The nice thing about an IR to state the obvious is that you can shoot any surface. I ended up picking up a second one of the same manufacturer for my dad because he likes that sort of thing even though he doesnt burn wood. We compared them sided by side and found them amazingly accurate. He uses it to get the temps of the road when he walks the dog in the summer or inside his car on a hot day etc.

I have a gauge on the side of the stove, a flue probe in the double wall, and a hand held IR. A guy just has to know!

Two magnetic; two IR; could easily be too complicated!

Good point...it was a problem...I have about 50% (+) of my air intake holes blocked off...otherwise it goes through a load of wood in about 3 hours! I meant to install a key damper the last time I had things apart but the project didn't go real well and in my haste to get things back together late that evening...I forgot about the damper! :headbang:
How so? Elevation? That varies a lot in Kimberlys neck of the woods...what's your elevation Kim?

That's changing rapidly though...last time at was at the Mustang nationals everybody had a laptop hooked to their car...and there was some fast, I mean FAST! cars there (and alot of them were driven there...and back home)...pretty cool!

I guess I'm more saying the temperature difference of being much further north, not the elevation.:)

Although localized geography/wind/weather can affect how a stove burns too. My first year burning wood I couldn't wrap my head around the SW wind turbo effect, or the sure hard to battle through an east wind on start up voodoo.

Not accurately, a smooth flat black surface is most accurate with IR...anything else...you never know how far off they are...even moving just a bit will change the reading on some surfaces, and the angle of the gun relative to the surface that is being measured will affect the reading.
There's nothing sayin the IR guns are always entirely accurate either, as cheap as they have gotten I have a hard time believing they are all "calibrated" real well...probably still way better than those magnetic thermometers on average though...

Oh, I figured you were sayin it was they elevation because maybe she's in the mountains (higher elevation)
32* should affect a chimney the same in your neck of the woods as hers...as long as the elevation is close to same

Yeah I stand corrected, they dont work on glass for one example. They need to be relatively close to the item you're checking due to the cone affect. When I got my stove I purchased a stove top and found it to be very inaccurate so took it back. Im sure as long the IR is roughly close its good enough for our purposes, not to mention they are fun! Time to get ready for fishing!

Someone took a reading of his cat sleeping next to the stove, I laughed way too long on that one!

It matters more what you do when the cat is awake though...

Quick derail, saw a video of a guy in Russia (from his apartment) who had wolves chasing a laser pointer dot in the streets.

I noticed the top section of the chimney near the cap has heat discolouration that you see in metal. Is that OK?

The manual for the stove stated to place the thermometer for the break in fires on the left or right side above the door. I have it placed on the right side on the top near the front edge. Is that the wrong place to have the thermometer?

Pretty normal...it is actually oils in the soot/creosote that is on the cap...when dew/rain/snow drips off the cap it picks up a lil oil that gets left behind on the pipe...it will go away over the summer

They're more concerned with performance, EFI is a direct result of stricter regs from the epa and the consumers desire for more fuel efficiency...
