Hi All. I don't post as often as I should, but wanted to share pics of my first score of the year. The tree in the picture at my work came down last week. My co-worker, who manages the building, knows of my wood hoarding issue and offered it to me. Of course I took it! I have one trailer load already taken home and in preparation from splitting. Looking forward to getting the rest by this coming weekend. The base is somewhere around 24 inches diameter. Pretty sure the wood is red elm. Not the best, of course, but I find it worthwhile given the very easy access to the tree. Just back up the trailer right to it! Splitting will likely be fun... it likely being elem and all. Did some on Sunday last, and got through it reasonably easy... perhaps red elm is not as stringy as other elms. That all said, it splits kinda like some black cherry I had some years ago. Enjoy the pics! Pics are out of order. Note also that its been quite a while since is car hoarded even a few pieces. But just gotta do it sometimes!
Sad that we don't have red elm here as I'd like some. And yes, it does split much different that our elm. I've heard it burns good and I like the american elm we have for burning too.
Nice score. Any chance you could get a close up of the bark? Many times people ask about red elm and it's difficult to ever find a reliable bark pic.
