I was talking to a semi-elderly lady that works at a store in town and she said that some SOBs came onto her place and stole nearly a 1/2 cord! She was so angry because she's on a fixed income and has to pay for delivery. Who does that? There's a special place in hell for firewood thieves!
It can be hard to comprehend how people can make such bad life choices, and for some it is undoubtedly poor decision making and when something like heroin gets it's claws into you that is tough to break free from. About 2 years ago my work took me into some charitable accommodation for people in recovery from addiction and trying to re-enter society. I was lucky enough to have the time to speak with a few of the people I met and it was a real eye opener. A high % of hardcore drug addicts use because they need to escape reality, a childhood of abuse or neglect, the pain of a broken family or relationship. Not everyone everyone resorts to drugs in these situations and not all users are "self medicating" to escape the pain of their brokenness but some are, there are always two sides to every story. I hope that you don't consider my tone either patronising or lecturing, it's certainly not my intention, I just wanted to answer your question: how the hell do people get on drugs? Jim
Helps ya appreciate how lucky you are even if you don't have everything you might have ever wanted doesn't it ?
Not just opiates either. I am astounded at the number of people I know who are on "mood suppressants". I best not get started on children being 'medicated' for "behavioral problems".
Yes why 3rd graders need drugs cause the can't sit still for 7 hours a day is My school gave Lil guy an exercise ball instead of chair!! Worked like a charm.. P.S. he still didn't sit still
Excellent! We didn't get exercise balls or pills when I was a kid. We learned to control our impulsive behavior, or suffer <gasp> consequences. Ain't nobody gonna tell me that today's kids are any more 'energetic' than my generation was. Disruptive students learned not to be disruptive. This sometimes required <double gasp> ...................discipline.
What a cool thing to do! I don't get it, all kids are wiggly and antsi and fidgety or whatever you want to call it. I feel so fortunate my lil ones school still has recess and PE class.
I beg to differ just a little, RCBS - kids these days (yep, I am officially old now I guess) probably do have more pent up energy, because they're not waiting to get out of school to go swim, fish, play ball, ride bikes, etc.. they're waiting to get out of school to go on InstaChat, play Xbox, or get on face time with their friends instead of seeing them in person! Present company's children in large part excluded, I'm sure.
That's a pretty good idea there, and although we haven't met in person I've read enough of your stories about getting the kids out on sleds etc to know you're not letting your little one(s) loaf around all day!
That’s only a slight differing, and purely on semantics, really.....a lot of these youngin’s are in this way because of the poor parenting and socially driven norms about getting dirty/sick/hurt/scraped up, etc. It will only set the future of things back a bit. Thankfully, there’s plenty of rough and tumble kids still getting outside after school(like our neighbor’s kids) to give us all a glimmer of hope!
I still remember quite well ol' Mrs Warner dragging me out of the 4th grade classroom by my ear. Woman had a death grip on me. Marched me right to the principal's office. It must've worked. That was 40 years ago and it's still quite clear in my mind
I fully agree on the outdoor activities. Increased amounts of sugar in our diets may also be a factor? I'll add in the constant barrage of information, mainly from small lcd screens. I think that kids get 'bored' easily now due to a constant influx of sounds and colors emitted from screens that we somehow think are ok to give to a 3 year old. If the screen keeps them occupied, they won't 'bother' anyone. I think they build a tolerance, for a lack of better word, to all the info coming in constantly. They don't have to rely on their imagination...there's a bright and noisy screen right there in front of them to 'entertain' them. Imagination destroys boredom. I can relate to being bored at school. Elementary and middle school came very easily for me. Always first done with assignments, excellent grades. I was lucky. But...I also used to just doodle or write short stories once I finished the assignments. I did not disrupt the rest of the class, even though the schoolwork was easy and 'boring', leaving me with lots of unscheduled time on my hands. Visceral experience is going the way of the dodo in the case of children. They are not better off for it. If I had children, social services would probably end up taking them. I would 'free range' them, just like I was raised. Seems some people frown upon this method nowdays. Lesson learned. I got paddled one time in 2nd grade. Cannot remember what the infraction was at this point (I had a few in that grade, including chasing the girls around with earthworms dug from the playground), but I for sure remember the punishment. I was never sent to the Principles office for discipline for the rest of my career at school. (not getting caught helps).
Hey RCBS any update on this? Did you figure out who it was yet? Did you set up cameras? Any more wood missing?
I hope you filed a report with the law. You need to have it documented that someone is stealing from you. Give them a value for the stolen goods. Estimate on the higher side. The cops will no doubt do nothing, it most likely will fall on you to catch them. Trail cams are your ally here. If you catch them and there is already a report of theft the cops might check the thieves place and find the missing firewood. This would be better for you. Personally I think the punishment for theft should be severe. We are too lenient as a society.
OP said he had it marked with yellow paint when cutting to length. And it was cut to 21" lengths. If OP can describe to the law species, and length of the wood and yellow paint marks on wood and its there I'd say he'd have a pretty good case its his.
when Johnny Law shows up to investigate he will see... firewood... 21" is not "beyond a shadow of a doubt" in court. and paint marks, while incriminating, aren't like a vin on a car... while i sure think this whole thing sucks, i'm not confident the system would find someone guilty when they "were just trying to stay warm"
