Swamp birch ? It is protected but there's just one or two patches of it growing somewhere out in western ma.
White or paper birch in 1980’s was protected had friends mom wanted some so cut it off of family camp and he had a signed note from land owner.. after brought truckload down in car sold it to pay for weekend $$
