Sounds like a dream come true to me. I am still working on building my own home on 40 acres after 3 years. I get discouraged by how much work I have left to do sometimes though.
You've got your work cut out for you, but its the best kind of work there is (building your future). Umpteen thousand decisions to make.
JC, you are going to live the "true" American dream most here have! Not only do I applaud you but envy you as well ! Congratulations!
Definitely gonna be neighbors I'm 10min from Menlo if there is anything I can do help on the move let me know
Congratulations! My wife and I have this same thing planned. I'm currently flipping our second house and will hopefully be able to buy a good chunk of land after this one. Keep us posted on your progress!!
You're not kidding...from siting the house, to getting the well up and running, to where to put the septic, to getting the electric connected, to.......well you know the drill!
Update...went up this morning to walk the property some...starting to firm up some ideas. The cabin is going to be (barring any last minute changes) 20ft X 32ft, 1 story. We don't need much and will be also building a small guest cottage. I am seriously considering a shipping container as a sort of work shop / storage building, as I can't keep bringing tools back and forth. After building I can add to it to make a pole barn on either side. Haven't found the camera yet but will post pics soon as I can.
I may need to get with you for "local" sources for services. Have been lucky these last 15 years in finding auto mechanics, etc. Also am toying with the idea of hiring (under the table) a carpenter help frame.
Boy does that ever bring back some happy memories! Thank you. Now please do yourself a favor and unlike us, take lots of pictures as you go. We wish we had.
Found the camera, and am going up again this weekend as my wife is out of town! I can spend much more time looking around. Tentatively picked the site for the house, providing the septic will work in the area, and the septic guy also does grading. He might be a valuable asset for local electricians, plumbers, etc. More to come.
Couple of pictures I took after closing Wed...it's all ours! Can't wait to start construction on the cabin. First pic is part of the open field area...second is the old (burned down) cabin foundation, with intact chimney which might be dismantled for the bricks...last one shows treeline and about 2-3 acres of logged area where they took out the larger pines. Beyond that is the bulk of the hardwoods I will eventually harvest. More pics as we go!
Lucked into a great deal on a travel trailer this weekend, and was able to have the guy View attachment 110429 deliver (bumper hitch only on my truck) and set it up. Now I can have a base of operations, as the land is 75 miles away. Next will be a shipping container (20') for a tool shed/workshop and setting up the electric to it, as I have a power pole right there. Really starting to come together now.
