Sorry folks, I must have skimmed the OP and missed the fire grate part. I'll just go sign myself into grammar jail for 30 days and use my time processing firewood instead. Enjoy the pit.
I will probably drill some weep holes in the bottom pan. I will also need to build some sort of waterproof cover for it (plywood?) if we are going to leave it out (when it's finished) on the patio which I haven't built yet! Seems everything one does around the yard or house initiates a cascade of other tasks (mostly instigated by the Wif) that must be done to accompany the first accomplishment!
I know you guys are joking ,but seriously, this has been such a PITA from the beginning that it is definitely a "One Off"!
Decided against a tripod. Went with a swiveling pot hook arm instead. Will make an adjustable trammel hook shortly.
Got the grill surface done. Seems like a simple thing to do but everything is a learning experience. Gave up on two grates. Decided to go simple with a single grate that is offset down so you can get a good sear on meat but also adjust up high enough to cook more slowly. Not a huge cooking surface but never intended this as a main cooking appliance. The main purpose will be to facilitate liquid refreshment! Anyway, the dome is on hold as I am out of energy. Hopefully fire this baby off tomorrow!
Finally got to use the pit to burn some uglies and some hot dogs. Stuck the ring over between the wood stacks. Was a bit warm still so we didn't have a roaring fire but it was pleasant, burned well and we got to toast our buns as well. Just a low key trial run!
Lucky I live in the somewhat nearby area Russ, you’re definitely a man of many talents and that isn’t second to none. Might as well PM you because that is one heck of a pit!
