We homeschool and my 17yo son runs the wood stove more than anyone. He was just saying this morning how much he likes this stove and how easy it is to maintain good temps for hours on end. It's really responsive to minor adjustments of the air control and at the end of a burn cycle, with a big coal bed, we usually open up the air to 100% for another hour or two of very usable heat. Typically we get the stove hot on 100% air after reload for about a half hour then run it on 25 to 40% air. It can really throw a tremendous amount of heat when needed.

Well, I must admit, I did have one bit of disappointment with it last week. I've always wanted to try a Coleman folding oven on top of a wood stove. I've had an unused one sitting on the shelf in the basement with other camping stuff for about 15 years now. I got it out and dusted it off and took the cover off the middle burner on the stove and put the oven on top. After preheating it for a half hour and trying to bake a batch of brownies for an hour and a half, the brownies just weren't baking, and we had to finish them in the kitchen oven. :(

We haven't had really cold temps yet but we have had the stove top up around 560-580 (still probably not "out of third gear" or just barely into fourth) and the top front of the stove at that point was 700. It was pumping out an inordinate amount of heat at that point and I had to open the front door of the house to cool it off a bit.

Looks like we'll be getting to single digits for the first time by Thursday evening so we'll be running the stove a bit hotter this week.

One thing I've noticed, when I'm going for heat, not a slow low cat burn, the secondary air can chew through a good bit of wood pretty quick. Moreso with the cherry than the oak, of course.

A little more info on emissions from the Woodstock blog:

Low EPA Emissions Across All Outputs

The Ideal Steel Hybrid achieved weighted average emissions of 0.54 gm/hr using method 5G3, and an “Adjusted Emissions” of 1.04 gm/hr. The adjustment factor was created in 1988 to account for prospective differences in test methods, and is currently the result published by EPA. The new EPA regulations propose to eliminate the adjustment factor. In any case, the Ideal Steel Hybrid will have among the lowest, if not the lowest, emissions among affordably priced stoves.

Further, the Ideal Steel Hybrid has the lowest “high burn” emissions on record. Normally, the way manufacturers lower the “weighted average” emissions is to limit the high burn rate to under 40,000 BTUs/hr, because emissions generally go up as output goes up. The Ideal Steel Hybrid emits a record low 1.3 gm/hr at 60,000 BTU/hr, in large part due to the addition of an automatic catalyst air intake (see Under The Hood 4: Catalyst Air: We apply an old idea in a new setting).

The Ideal Steel Hybrid will meet any new EPA Standard, no matter how stringent, with very high efficiency and very low emissions.

I think the big firewood producers are well placed to take advantage of this trend. Here's two central PA producers:
(Check out the stacks 1:17 into the first video):

(Check out the MOUNTAIN of firewood at 1:40 into this video):
