I would have loved to have seen the burn time on a Fireview that was built to the size of the Steel stove... I think that would have been a 2 day burner with lots of heat ...

Yep, when you want them, just turn the handle on the PH and you have a show. ;)

The Progress is super easy to load. Before getting th stove, with no experience I could not understand all the talk of "Get a N/S loading stove, i's soe much betterto load....". Just seemed, open the doorand stick the wood in, what's the big deal? But now after a year, I get it. The PH is a N/S loading stove. The splits are E/W in the stove (left to right looking at it from the front), but since the door is on the side you are really loading "n/s", or sliding the splits straight in. That does make itreally easy, and safe as well.

The fact you can load EITHER direction in the Ideal is absolutely awesome! Especially in a case like you (ad most of us), you often end up with short splits (from a previous stove, or tree guy cut it up to much...) and chunks and uglies. So with that big door, you get th both of all worlds.

What are the basic dimensions of the firebox (Width x Deep x High)? Did I miss that somewhere?

    .
22" wide, 18" deep, 11" high at the rear and 15" high at the front of the secondary air plate that forms the ceiling of the firebox

They are usually $3600, right now on sale for $3200. I'd say about half the year or slightly less, the Woodstocks are on sale.

I need a hell of a "refurbished" sale for the Progress and an "intro sale" for the Steel stove to give my wood burning addiction a new starting lineup next year. My Billy Beane approach to wood burning continues.

BB, if I worked fo Woodstock, I would have sent you a PH already! And had it installed for you, and if you didn't like i after a month, remove it for you. Cause I'd bet 1000-1, you'd keep it, and love it, and buy it fo whatever they asked for it. ;)

If for noting else, just to get a comparison from it, and the othrstoves you are running and/or hve run in past.

Of course, that doesn' help you cause I don't work at Woodstock, have never been there, and don' know anyone there other than a phonecall to order it, and a few emails with questions. ;)

But to be honest, I'm amazed they can deliver the PH for 3,200 or whatever it is, and make a profit. The soapstone alone can't be cheap, then they have t cut it, shape it, finish it (sand and polish a bit), then fit it to stove, not to mention cast some iron, ben some sheet-metal, mold and bend some stainless steel, make and insert gaskets, add in a CAT, som hardware, paint, packing, marking....

I can't figure out how they make money!

This is probably why you smelt smoke, you had the air so low that the gas was building up igniting and blowing smoke out the front seal. This is exactly what happens on my VC when I completely close the primary. Just my opinion though and Im a noob....

I didn't see where he said he smelled smoke, but I think he meant he had the front door to his house open. ..don't think there was any puffing out smoke through his seals/gaskets.

Machira we need to get you up there sometime. You would love the walk through of the place and to see them building a PH is so worth the trip. I'll tell you this, once you see how they are built you will realize why they weigh 700 lbs, but you will also wonder even more how they make a profit on them, as there are a LOT of parts in one of them babies.

Seriously do a road trip sometime and a couple of us other guys will meet you up there and we'll have some fun. Maybe they'll even let us play with the waterjet toy.

Raybonz is dying to go up too, so I'll cajole him and then we'll get Charlie to come over from Upstate.. it'll be a party.

We did not smell any smoke when I took that video.

We only smelled smoke the one morning when I had cut the air control way down to about 6 or 7% overnight and got up to door glass completely opaque with soot, very little heat off the stove, and stove top temps under 200. We have not experienced that smell before or since that one episode.

Now I know with my installation and flue not to run it on that low of an air setting. There is no point to even try for that long of a burn and I do not intend to operate this stove in that fashion in real use.

This is also why Woodstock likes to run Beta stoves ahead of releasing a new model. It helps them identify potential problems and areas that can be improved. They didn't really intend this stove for the long burns I put it through already on this thread, and they might not offer air settings that low on the production Ideal Steel stoves.

Me too. Most times once a post reaches around 30 I quit looking unless someone asks something of me.
