About all I can offer up on the cleaning subject is something I remember SmokeyTheBear saying many times, even at the 'other place'.

I'm paraphrasing, but it goes something like this:

When you think your pellet stove is clean, it's probably not.

I'm sure he'll come along and offer up the correct verbiage.

You mean I have to buy two types of oil and can't just mix gas with some of the bar and chain oil I already have?

Grizz told me he is not familiar with pellet stoves and wanted it spoon fed. I am guessing similar to how you helped my with my new pellet stove :)

Most of the BBS clerks use that line on their pellet buyers. They hate it when we want to shuffle through the stacks for the good stuff hiding within.

Just point em to our pellet review section.... Myth busted. ;)

    How does this look?

Q: What does “Scraping the pot” mean?

    A:
A buildup of carbon will eventually manifest on your pellet stove’s burn pot causing problems such as clogged air holes and problems with feeding or igniting. A metal utensil can be employed to remove the carbon.

JT touched on this but I'll state it, some people have a hard time understanding that in many cases softwood pellets are better than hardwood pellets. Goes against the grain of everything people have been taught about burning wood, but it is fact. A lot of pellets are a hardwood/softwood blend of various percentages, and there are some very good hardwood pellets, but most here would prefer a good softwood pellet.

I think it comes from back in the day when many burned coal, sometimes there was a piece that turn white and extrememly hard (maybe minerals?), and it would make a clink sound in the coal furnace ash grate. Some pellets can do a similar thing, a very hard chunk forms and does not exit the burnpot with the rest of the loose ashes and needs to be scraped out. I had a brand that produces several large clinkers and I jokingly called it clumper rather than clinker. Clumper is not a real word. Why are you working on your thankgiving day Adam?

Somebody here knows the science behind it, hopefully one of them will chime in.

I'm not really working, I'm having fun. And if someone posts to this thread I can ask for an explination and bookmark it for later. A lot of this FAQ list is done, but you guys keep coming up with more good questions so I keep adding them to the list.
