I think I have a HVBW laying in the pile of mess in the crick. Rare firewood for me. I like the smell of it's bark when burnt. Otherwise still prefer oak.

Rare scrounge for me. First time felling one for me. May save the trunk for milling depending on how much heartwood there is.

Its not known for its BTU's. I like the smell when splitting.

It's a trash tree around here. I actually prefer box elder to BW. Squirrels plant the BW around here. The neighbor has a big BW that drops the baseball nuts into my yard. I throw so many back over onto their land.

I had to do some raking around my lower stacks where I am processing right now because I was afraid I were going to roll an ankle or fall there are so many walnuts on the ground. A bumper year here I guess from all the rain?

Yeah I can imagine it would be too easy to do that. Theres a second walnut where I'll be cutting today that is dropping nuts on their driveway. I like running them over with the truck when I leave! :loco:

My friend collected half a bucket of nuts from the his rental property for me to feed the squirrels come Winter.
I was tempted to toss one out and see if the chipmunks would stuff one into their jowls. Be an interesting sight.

    Thanks Eric.

462 finished the soft maple (far right in pic) then felled the black walnut. 2511 and 241 got it bucked up. Saved 8.5' of the trunk to mill even though the heartwood not that wide. Took down one of the small dead ashes and bucked. 2-3 wheelbarrows worth of the ash.

Another small dead ash and the English oak left to fell. May bring the splitter over Saturday.

I split Sycamore today and I would say it’s somewhere between TOH and Red Maple with ease of splitting. Brad either you got a bad one or I a good one. I’m hoping the rest of the tree splits as easily. Even the knots were easy to pop open. It made lots of nice straight splits too.

Good for you there. Possibly good and bad splitting stuff? Fresh cut ends are easier?

Maybe I was splitting older rounds? It left a lasting impression enough for me to not want it again. General concensus on FHC is its not fun to split.

Brought the hydro to the yard cut this afternoon. Split all the BW save for the trunk log set aside for milling and enough of the maple to make a half cord load. Back to storage and stacked the general cordage splits in the rack I emptied this week. Quarter cords worth. The bundle splits still on the truck will get moved soon.

Just the oak and small dead ash to take down plus the dead maple to split. Ill be back last week.

Interesting. Every sycamore I ever dealt with was a bear to split, with an interwoven grain like a black gum has. Never seen any split as nicely as yours. Good job!

Only wooding done yesterday was to move the bundle splits off the truck to the bundle shed and stack. Yard too squishy to drive over so wheelbarrowed them. Third of six rows nearly done. With all the cottonwood splits still at storage the fourth row could be completed. I add the CW to the stack little by little and/or stack it alone to mix in as it dries much faster.

Headed back to the yard cut today.

Yard cut felling postponed due to high wind. I ended up splitting some cottonwood halves at storage and loading directly onto the truck. Moved next door and stacked in the shed. It topped off the third row. Assembled some bundles for an upcoming order. Moved some 2 x 10's for the rebuild of a rack that will hold two cords.
