Well it was in a poll on an obscure forum on the interwebz so it must be true. Super scientific

 

Red Oak is worldly recognized as King of Firewoods. Did you vote?

 

We have to look at it as a big picture. Can’t just grab BTU’s or just seasoning time. Otherwise Osage Orange, Black Locust, Shagbark Hickory, and Rock Maple are all vastly superior to White Oak which wasn’t shown in the poll.

 

Nah first I’ve seen it. Too busy taking care of trees with a science based approach as an arborist. However, even before I became an arborist 20 odd years ago red oak wouldn’t even crack my top 5.

It’s cool you made a super scientific poll and are now trying to use it to back up a statement that I just plain will never agree with. I don’t care to take the time to set you straight because it’s clear to me you’ll just point to your super official poll. In short, I’ve got better ways to spend my time. Just skimming through the comments my first thought is you’ve got some major confirmation bias going on off the top of my head. I’ll file it in the bin of chit I’ve seen on here that makes me roll my eyes and we can agree to disagree.

 

we have pictorial proof from a Backwoods Savage GTG. All of his oak is 3+ years aged

Beauty white oak score NCwoodhoarder and welcome to FHC. As others have said, give it plenty of time to dry and you're going to have some premium firewood In my area there's a lot more red oak than white, so that's what ends up in my stacks. Whenever the opportunity comes to score a little white oak (or chestnut oak, which is in the white oak family) admittedly I go a little gaga over the stuff You can't really go wrong with either/or, the key being that whatever you've got is dry.

What is your opinion on the Willow Oak? In the red oak family-has the long skinny pointed leaf and pea size or slightly bigger acorns?
This tree is abundant in NC. I have 9 left at 30-50’ alone on my property.

 

I’ll bite. I have only ever encountered it once over a decade ago doing storm clean up in Florida. It seemed similar to Quercus rubra (red oak). Maybe a little less dense for having grown in a southern climate. I’d say keep it it’s already on your property and easy. It’s also decent/good firewood. Just not the king of firewood
