OK, when I do a 372 with a BBK and an 064 piston:
    1) The customer gets the 52mm piston that came in the BBK back with their saw, that allows then to get the saw running without buying anything. May not run as well as with the 064 but it is back in service. They paid for the piston they should get what they paid for, I do not stock pile parts that were paid for by a customer but not used.
    2) Yes I do send a parts list back with the saw indicating the parts used, manufacturer part numbers and a list of sources for those parts used.
In reality; it is your money and you can spend it and your valuable time any way you like. I have no axe to grind considering what I do vs. porting or those that do it professionally, just offering another option.

Great, and I have no axe to grind either way, I certainly don't know much about the process either way. I am just asking questions as I am curious about how all this is typically done. Think of any questions I ask you as if they were part of a publicity interview.

I don't have any problems with questions. I would rather pass on knowledge than keep it to myself. None of this 2-stroke stuff is rocket science. In fact nothing significant in 2-stroke technology has changed in the last 50 years.

I spent yesterday afternoon teaching another member here how to do a top-end job on his saw, it was fun we both enjoyed it very much. I am confident that Jack could tear down his Husqvarna as easilly as he rebuilds his big-block drag engines.

Awesome. Got another guy on here that lives 15 miles from me. Feel free to stop in on your way through (if you drive, that is).

After our discussions of porting and the options I present: I should make something clear.

A BBK and 064 piston on a 372 is not going to be a Mastermind'd 372, it will be around 90% of Randy's performance, perhaps a little more or a little less. It is however something that you can complete yourself in a few hours and after doing so, be able to maintain/repair your saw yourself and there is 'no little man behind the curtain'! Once completed you can then judge if you want to go after the last 10%.

What's the advantage of using an 064 piston instead of the one that comes with the BBK? Is it just better fit and finish or are there important shape / dimensional differences?

Jon1270 great question, I was wondeing when someone would ask why! The 064 piston is taller than both the stock HVA 50mm and the BBK 52mm piston, resulting in higher compression. It also has a little wider skirt which will allow you to widen the ntake and the exhaust ports, plus it is .5mm taller overall which will allow you to raise the EP a little to increase blow-down without short circuiting the scavangeing. These last few advantages will require you to grind (port) the jug.

While I have been doing this stuff, substituting parts, there have been options tried that just did not work out. looking at the specs it appeared that the 272XP piston might yield greater advantage than the 064, NOT! I try do do these things in such a way that no grinding/machining of the jug is required. While I could get the 272 piston to work, the additional base gasket height threw the port timing out the window, the saw ran but was a dog! Same kind of thing happens if you try to put a 48mm slab sided 365SP piston into a 262XP in place of the factory 48mm windowed piston, runs but it is also a dog!

Then you got the case of me putting a slab sided BB372 piston in a poulan that had a windowed piston oem and she ran better then great. Wont know till you try. ;)

Cut4Fun above is a former saw racer, these kinds of swaps are quite common in that world. And I believe he told me once that a full blown race saw would last perhaps 30 minutes at the wood lot! OBTW Poulan saws are NOT a joke or a low performance saw no matter what people say or think. I have an old goat vomit green 3000 and it is one of my favorite saws. Go to the website in his signiture and have a look around, I bet you will join!

Wasnt me saying that about a racesaw at a wood lot. 30mins no way.

IMO a real race saw wont last 1 real cut like we are talking in firewood. They are just not built for that.

I for one am honored that our little corner of cyberspace has attracted some seriously respectable talent. After all, we are just a bunch of firewood guys heating our houses. :loco:  :saw::saw::saw:

What do you think most of us 'old farts' do go racing and chase the the young chicks? NO, Mama don't allow any of that foolin round here! Kevin cuts firewood like the rest of us!

If I wasn't 66 years old I would be back racing like in the picture.

OBTW Thomas Jefferson was just a farmer who lived in a one room little stone house he heated himself with wood he cut!

Sure I've dreamed about a custom saw - a Mac 797 or 125 frame with TWO 101B kart engines in it!! ;) Trouble is,most of the guys who could build me something like that if they're still around are most likely 80 years old & are happy in retirement & not working at the lathe & turning wrenches anymore. Then there's that little thing called "a fat wad of spare cash" that would be a major factor also...:saw:

I do my own porting unless I buy a used saw already ported. I like cut squish bands with no machining to the piston so if you do have some sort of failure and the jug saved you just pop in a new piston and you're back in business. I've got a set of numbers for both the 50mm and Xpw cylinders that work good and are right with the other guys. It does take machining though.

Since we're all in a sharing mood today, anyone do a carb swap on an 028 super with good luck?? If so, which one is a nice step up? I was thinking 044 carb, but that may be way overkill...
    This thing is tiny...

Oh, and I can vouch for Mike's recipe's on those saws..
    Good runners they are..
