I have a lead on CL on a echo cs-440 44cc. For $150, even with the broken chain break handle, this is a good deal on a solid step up for me right?

I did get a message from him, but not a price yet. But esp w shipping and all, I don’t want to low-ball him and I think this one will be up my alley. I think I can get a metal replacement chain break lever pretty cheap.

Echo 15% off sale is coming up in a couple weeks. Buy something new, treat it well and you will have it for a long time.

Buying used will save you money but you never know what is/could go wrong, Wait for the sale and get a nice new saw and you'll forever be happy when you go to cut. Not knowing Echo's, maybe someone here can recommend which model. Id go 45cc range. Easy enough to handle with enough power to cut bigger logs.

Is the owner going to pull the muffler and show you the condition of the piston? Will he/she show you a compression gauge hooked up to it?
That’s a big chance to take even if you consider $150 a good deal.

My brother has a Rancher 455 with a 20” bar that does a decent job and a buddy has the 60cc Echo pulling a 20” bar with a modded muffler that’s pretty decent. My 361 out cuts the Rancher probably two cuts to one, the Echo does a little better. I consider them both nice starter saws.

I’m a pro saw guy but understand it’s not for everybody. They cost more but there is a reason for that.

I pulled the trigger on the cs-440. I appreciate the input, and you have fully claimed the right to say “I told you so,” if the saw has major issues.
It started up after a few pulls and ran a little rough and smokey, but my free ryobi does that cold too. The chain was spinning and that was about it for my testing.
The guy says they got it for a tree in the backyard and never used it again.. wasn’t sure how the chainbrake lever broke. It looks like the chain was used a few times and never sharpened.

Looks like it got crushed by something or took a hard drop. Hope you get years of good service from it.

Not likely to walk into an Ace Hardware, and find an 18”, 3/8, .050 Full Skip, in a Clamshell package hanging on a hook, but a Decent Dealer should have a spool of Full Skip and be able to spin you a loop or two or three ;)

One of the advantages of doing business with a good OPE dealer!

Sorry buZZsaw BRAD I guess I was looking for a steal of a deal, not a stihl of a deal ;).

You can say “I told you so” if it doesn’t work out.

assuming the compression is decent, how much bar do you think it could power with a skip tooth chain? It is rated for 16-20”
Not for standard use, but just in case I run into some big logs.

No worries. I hope it serves you well. What size bar does it have? A 16" can cut a lot of average sized wood. I suppose a 20" even with standard full comp teeth will cut just not fast and you wont be able to lean into the cut. I learned that with my MS290 when i got a 20" bar and cut big wood.
