I have lots of pine cones in the yard. I'm thinking of getting some dollar store candles and melting them over some pine cones...Anyone ever try that?

In college I used to do something similar, except it wasnt with paper towels and pellets or wax it was with Clorets of this really funky plant which had start shaped leaves. LOL> That was a 1 million years a go.

I am sure the paper towel roll/firestarters work great and everytime I see posts with someone talking about making firestarters I think how nice 1/4 of a super cedar works. My honey do list and my own list is so darn long I just cannot bring myself to even consider making firestarters. Not knockin anyone in any way for doing those cause I am sure they are great, just sayin.

I use Super Cedars but when I run out I get inventive.

Super Cedars are Great Fire Starters.

Email them they will send you free samples.

I've been trying to come up with a decent use for sawdust. Right now I give it away for horse bedding.
I have a bin that is 4ft wide x4ft tall and 8ft deep. That fills up after about 2-3 days of cutting, maybe 10-12 cords worth of firewood cut.

    Nate,
Try using melted parafin/wax. Mix your sawdust in until oatmeal consistency, let harden. Once hard, you can break off pieces for fire starters

Uh, I filled a waxed half gallon milk carton with pellets and dropped it onto a bed of White Ash coals...burned like a meteor. Better stick with a quart or less!

I know I posted a tip about using wax as an ingredient in fire starters, but have any of you had any issues with creosote build up because of the wax? I usually use wood kindling or cornstalks to start my fires, but will occasionally come up with some fire starter idea, mostly because I hate to see stuff like sawdust/shavings go to waste.

My wife has stuffed paper towel rolls with other toilet paper rolls and towel rolls… for quite a few years now. We save them all year for fire starters. 3 slid down under 2" dry wood get s the job done every time. That type of cardboard just seems to light and burn very easily, and lasts long enough with enough heat to get things going.

Here's an idea I found a few years ago. The plans are for "horse manure logs", but I'm sure you could apply it to sawdust (with some kind of binding agent). It seems like with a little experimentation, you might be able to get a half cord out of your sawdust bin by pressing into these bricks. We've got horses, but my better half wasn't too keen on burning the stuff in the house going by the "original recipe".
