I've been looking for my 20 year EDC for 1 1/2 years now. I like my new one but still hold slim hope that one day I will find it in some oddball location so I can hold it and love it and have him home again. Funny how attached a feller can get to their knives.
This guy showed up today and sure enough I found my original one yesterday. I like the patina on the old one better.
I've been carrying one of these for many years (not my photo though). It was a gift after my second tour over there.
Just curious if anyone on here has ever been hassled by anyone about assisted open knives, blade length, simple possession of, or anything else. I know one guy that wasn't allowed into a college football game because on his keychain he had a mini multi-tool that had about a 1 1/2 inch knife blade, had to get out of line and either take it back to his vehicle or surrender it.
I think I commented earlier, I’ve had multiple instances. The Empire State building made me check/surrender my knife at the metal detector. I did and got it back. The Smithsonian Air & Space museum door attendant spotted my clip and made me take it back to the car upon entry. If I would have had it just in my pocket, he’d have never stopped me. That’s the most recent 2.
My 'new' EDC is my old Spyderco that I just found a couple days ago (black one at the bottom). I had 'misplaced' it many years ago and thought it lost for good. It's nothing special, and kind of beat up, however I carried it in the war so it has sentimental value. The Iraqi Freedom Spyderco will now be just a special event carry. The top knife is a limited-edition World Trade Center commemorative Spyderco I was lucky enough to have been given when they were released. That one only gets carried on 9/11.
Those are nice , Great knives but for me too nice for everyday use. I have a cheap Gerber Paraframe as a daily driver that gets used and abused on a daily basis so a good knife is out of the question. I need to laser etch mine " Do not use as chisel , prybar or screwdriver"
That's why I was glad to find my old Spyderco, so I can 'retire' the nicer ones. I agree with you that most EDC's see a lot of abuse, and I usually have some type of utility knife/box cutter readily available when working. In theater, I always had at a minimum three knives on me when outside the wire, two for EOD work and the Spyderco for SHTF emergencies. The utility knife (blue center) wasn't exactly 'tactical' however it was the one I had and it saw a lot of use.
Sarg. May i ask why you prefer the serrated edge? I've always used the straight egde blades. Is there an advantage?
I often had to cut through thicker and tougher materials for my job and had to do it fast. The serrated edge gives you an advantage when cutting through things like rope, inner tubes, canvas, plastic, etc. so I usually carried a dual-edged knife. I've just carried that concept over to my current EDC knives, even though I am retired, and prefer to have the advantages of both blade styles on one knife.
Had Spyderco knives since the early 90's and have always liked them. I am so accustomed to the spydie hole that it takes me awhile to adjust to a new opening method.
I can't believe he came home! Although he never left home. I have went through my recliner multiple times and never saw it. This morning Mama Bear was looking for a missing remote after the grandkids were here yesterday and she came up to me and said weren't you looking for this. After 18 months AWOL he is home. I carried him for close to 20 years before he went missing and I was so disappointed when he left me. Mama Bear finding him was better than any Christmas gift she could have given me.
Have two of the same. One broke the tip and I reshaped it. Lost a third one some time back in an attic full of blown in insulation. Good luck finding that. Glad you found yours!
