Welp, yesterday I lost my trusty edc knife. I've had that crkt m21 for a few years now and it was actually my second after losing the first lol. It was a fantastic cheap edc but this time around I'm buying American made. So after some searching last night I came across ontario knife company out of NY. For under $40 this RAT1 should do the trick. I don't like to spend big money on my edc because I use and abuse them and sometimes lose them. I've never heard of them until now. Should be here friday. Of course I found the serrated version after I ordered the straight blade. Might have to order a second
Very nice looking knife. Ontario has a good reputation and the D2 tool steel is supposed to be a great multi purpose steel. Knives Of Alaska uses the D2 in their tools and they aren't cheap. Good price too!!!
The knife I ordered is actually aus 8 steel. Didn't realize that one in the pic was d2. The aus 8 will need a touch up a little more often but it sharpens great! I have a knives of Alaska alpha wolf fixed blade and it's a fantastic knife. I always carry it in my pack when hunting or fishing.
Well dangit! This is disappointing. Guess I didn't do my research well enough. I swear it said they were made is the US. .
I picked up one of those from Midway last month. Arrived with a very good functional (not show-off razor) edge. It’s light and sturdy and straight. The in lock lever is hard to find on close when I’m wearing gloves but I guess it’s a compliment that I can use it with gloves at all. Finish and detail are good for the price. I’m not a consistent EDC guy but this is the closest thing to it for me. David
I agree. The fit and finish are very good for the price. It feels good in the hand and has a darn good edge right out of the box. Time will tell on how tough it is. I'm pretty rough on my knives. I'm still on the hunt for an affordable, American made edc pocket knife though. I just can't spend the $150+ on benchmade, spyderco etc.
Kershaw has a few Made in USA without crazy pricing. Kershaw Knives Made In USA - American Made Kershaw Knives think Gerber does too.
The closest US made knife (I can think of off the top of my head) that for all intents and purposes uses the same quality level of components to the RAT1/2, is Buck's Vantage Select. Buck has a tiny Vantage (that I actually find too small) but their large (3 1/8 - 3 1/4 inch blade) is not bad for a "cheap" priced knife, but isn't cheap in quality.
Check out the Kershaw Leek or Blur. Both USA made, one is smallish, the other a bit larger. Leek is about $50 depending on scales. Blur is $40 at Walmart. Both spring assist openers. I have both and love both. Leek gets carried almost everyday, in rotation with my Benchmade Mini-Grip.
I have to check out that Leek myself. Bet you could shave with that if you had to. The Wood Wolverine , edit- My edc boot knife is a CRKT - SHRILL. My working knives could be Gerber, Kershaw, Spyderco, or Morakniv. I'm not picky but some styles work better than others, depending on what the current task at hand is.
I don’t recall when I got the knife, 3-4 years ago maybe but I now carry a Kershaw Burst 1970. Although made in China, I’m actually quite please with the blade. It’s decently sharp and it was far more so before. I seldom do carry the smaller finger sized “bone“ handle folding knife. It depends on what I use them for but I’ve found that those knives make it easy to clean shellfish with, razor clams...
