It is sad but the old deer camps are also dwindling here in MI. Actually our old deer camps were always tents. I had a good sized old army tent and so did a friend. When we had a big group we'd use both tents; one for sleeping and the other for eating and playing cards, etc.
Great title for a thread. I think thats the best description of how a pine flue fire starts that ive heard yet.
somehow i missed this thread PA Dutch. Was away last week. I personally dont hoard or burn pine (or any other softwoods) as my space is limited and i have access to plenty of decent hardwoods. I use pine boards for kindling and in the firepit but thats it. I passed up a score of pine two weeks ago. See my thread Morning Score Turns Out to be Soft Wood! :-( IMO if you have room and time and its easy access go for it!
Yeah buZZsaw BRAD I'm away on vacation this week (OC NJ). I typically wouldn't be online during vacation but I aggravated an old injury. I'm currently laying on the couch with my right leg propped up because my right knee is inflamed to the size of a softball, watching movies and checking out FHC posts. I'm gonna take the Pine. It's too easy access to pick up, for me to pass on it. Plus I would like to try some of the advice given in this thread.
We were camping and no cell signal. GF wasnt too happy (shes on her phone constantly) me, i have a cheap flip phone. Nothing worse than being in pain on vacation. Take care of the knee, be well and keep us updated with the pine score. Best of luck with it PA Dutch
A rare pic of me about to cut pine. Note the fence line under said pine. I decided cutting dead pine with a freshly hand-filed chain was a good ego booster.
No, it has been hung up about 20’ in the air the past three years and finally blew down. I cut it off the fence and will let it rot right there. I hoped it would have a few good pieces to try a Swedish candle, but no such luck.
I plan on it. Brought several containers to refill. Although I think it is best eaten warm right after it is made.
And you have to order them lids off. Last summer we bought 3 large buckets like that and the overflow that went into the bag filled up a 4th
I burn a bunch of white pine every year. Lights fast, burns hot, and best of all I can get it delivered for $0. If I ever run out, there's a ton of it down from power line trimming every year that no one else wants.. No better way to burn down coals and keep the temp up, imo.
Bumping into tree guys, making a few acquaintences, and having my stacks in view of the road. Twice I've had people stop and offer just based on seeing stacks and the owb (which is out of service now, but nobody needs to know that!), and I have a few tree service contacts. Around here, any pine that can't go to the mill has to be dumped at expense, so tree guys are happy to go a little out of their way to dump here for free.
The knee is doing better. I ended up developing a fever. I went into the doctor. Turns out I had an infection. He put me on some strong antibiotics. I'm not a fan of taking antibiotics unless I really need to but in this case I need it. Returned home yesterday. I still have something wrong with my knee. It has a lingering dull pain. I will try and setup an appointment with a specialist.
Sounds like you better get that knee checked out closely. Good luck. On another note, I am a big fan of White Pine. It surround's my place. Mother nature delivers a nice specimen regular enough to keep me stocked up. I run full loads all the time. Zero issues. My cat stove still gets nice long burn times with it. The tiny amount of ash leftover is amazing. I vote for grabbing it.
