So I built a 6 condo unit for birds out of ERC . Not sure what to put on it for a finish it will be outside. Have read people using minwax spar varnish. Also Olympic water guard wood sealer. Usually all my red cedar projects just turn grey old looking cause I never put anything on them. Would like this one to last a little bit.
The spar ureathane will need to be applied every couple of years and wood sealer may last a bit longer (my can says 6 years). I would think that either would do a nice job keeping the natural colors from graying.

So I also built this planter box out of red cedar to plant lettuce in it. Outside has the Olympic waterguard wood sealer on outside inside is still natural. I am liking it.
Finally got this bird house finished . 3 coats of spar varnish , we will see how it last. Another project finished 7:45 last night.
