Not sure, but my 12K (registered at 10k) equipment trailer is built well.

While I'm glad to see you're happy with your suretrac, they are junk IMO. A guy I know had them build a custom made gooseneck for him and it's cracked where the bulkhead and deck meet. Suretrac told him to pound sand. Also, they have problems with the shackles. 2 year old trailer.

There are tons of manufacturers. Some good ones are moritz, load trail, PJ, gatormade, Cam or Iron Bull.

That looks like a lightduty gooseneck, like a 10k gross. I have a feeling you are not getting the full story about your buddies trailer. Judging by the pictures it looks like it has been overload and/ or driven over rough terrain fast. It would have been nice to have seen a full pic of the trailer to see what the rest of it looks like currently. One thing that is really suspicious, is the torn shackles. Shackles are somewhat universal on trailers. This set does a 4k to 14k trailer. Greaseable Tandem Axle Trailer Spring Suspension Rebuild Kit Wet Bolt 3" Shackle | eBay Then with the gooseneck separating, that is another indication of abuse. It is not like the welds broke, the metal is breaking. What did the dealer where he bought it say?

A couple of other reasons I like the suretrac dump trailers is because they use tubing instead of channel for the frame. Tubing is more resistant to twisting than channel. They also use seam sealer on all the cracks(i.e. fenders to dump body) to keep water from getting in crack and causing rust.

You're making a lot of assumptions....the trailer was custom built for his tracked lift. He wanted a low profile gooseneck and they made this for him with his needs/requirements in mind. The problem is the bulkhead has no angled bracing. The trailer has only ever hauled the lift in the pictures and he doesn't drive the truck & trailer off road. The lift weighs ~7700 pounds, so it's under a 10k limit regardless. The owner is a retired semi truck driver, so he knows a thing or two about driving and loading trailers too. The dealer referred him to the manufacturer since it was a custom build.

As for the shackles, that's a different owner and trailer, but he also said to steer away from sure-trac. I do have a third friend with a sure-trac dump trailer and I've used it before, seemed to do the job just fine.

You threw me off a little with the pics being from 2 different trailers. I initially thought someone may have been loading something heavy with a short "wheel base" like a decent size mini ex or a dozer. That lift looks like it has a short "wheel base." When that lift is loaded, it is putting a lot of weight on the rear of the trailer and strain on the gooseneck. If the trailer has a dovetail it will make matters worse as it rocks over the dovetail. Something like my truck that weighs about the same as the lift but has a 172" wheelbase would not put as much strain on it. When my rear tires hit the ramps, the front would be way up on the trailer, more evenly distributing the load. Also a 7700lb lift is about maxing out that trailer even with tongue weight. With this trailer only being used for this lift it would not have been a bad idea to get a 14k trailer. What is special about the lift that he needed a custom trailer? I understand he did not want a deck over but there are some 12 and 14k lo pro goosenecks that would not be a custom build.

Here is an example.Equipment Gooseneck Trailers for Sale by Appalachian Trailers!

I know he is upset with suretrac, but I wonder how well the info on what he needed was relayed to suretrac. Or did suretrac drop the ball.

I never got into specific details, but I know he called more than once, sent emails and got the run around. They refused to help one bit. He tows with a 1 ton duramax, so it's gotta weigh more than the lift. This guy doesn't cut corners, he's up on his maintenance because he depends on his equipment to make him money every day. He recently had his duramax at the dealer for limp mode problem (under warranty), it was a guessing game on what was wrong and he lost 7 days of work. GM wouldn't give him a loaner vehicle bigger than a 1/2 pickup and ended up giving him a couple months of onstar for his problems. That's the last GM he buys.
