A new 3/4 or 1 ton diesel would be capable of pulling that load.

I have an 05 GMC with the 6.6. I think at 14k for a trailer I'd be at my limit of what I could pull safely.

With what you're wanting a 350/3500 minimum is what you need and a gooseneck will handle way better.

I realize that. I'm not looking to pull on a daily basis and I probably wouldn't be pulling it if the road conditions weren't good. Like I said, I think at 14 k I'd be at the limit. New truck and gooseneck trailer would be nice but out of the budget. Right now I pull a loaded 10k trailer with a weight distributing hitch without too much effort.

I've used some 7x14 dump trailers and been up around 18k on the trailer and almost 26k leaving the quarry. I have a 3500 SRW and if I was buying it would be gooseneck for sure even at 14k lbs.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I may look at a smaller machine so I'm not quite as heavy. Just won't be able to financially swing so much all at once. Right now the Big Tex 10 PI can take about a 7k lbs machine.

Barely. 5th wheel or gooseneck, no problem, but doing it off the bumper I would want to know details on the tow setup. 15k on a 3/4 ton (diesel or no) means weight distributing hitch and that's not going to be fun off-road if he's working in the woods.

I've been pushing CDL territory (26k) in a diesel 1t pickup, gooseneck trailer. It's not my first choice of tow vehicle for north of 20k. Tires especially and brakes just are not made for that kind of work. Plus unless you are hauling on flatlands, you will be working the crap outta a relatively light-duty powertrain.

A new F-250 diesel can tow up tp 17,600, and F-350 dually can tow upto 21,000. Both of those numbers are for conventional towing.

A new Silverado 2500 diesel can tow up to 14,500 and the 3500 can tow up to 20,000, conventional.

Yes he would need a weight distribution hitch. Usually once you get up to half the hitch capacity you need one.

I think your hitch is good for 12k.

The heaviest load on mine was 5 yards of fill dirt, maybe 12,500. It dumped it. I was pulling that with the tractor.

That happened to my uncle in his dump truck. I road with him to get 4 tons. When he started to pull away he said he loaded us heavy. When we got on the scales the guy had put 20 tons on the truck. They loaded us under a big hopper, not with a loader so we really could not tell how much he put on.

Then another time with my dad in 1 ton truck we went to get 4-4.5 tons. The guy with the loader pulled in too far and all the gravel was hitting the rack on the passenger side of the truck. It felt like the truck was going to roll over. The spring on the right rear was frowning. I even the load out with a shovel.

I'll have to look into that. I know my hitch is good for 14k. Might be that the receiver is less. On the newer trucks they advertise 17k trailering capacity for SRW and 23k for DRW. Don't know if that is specifically for gooseneck or not.

I think your rig will be just fine, drive it like you got some sense (like I know you do), just keep in mind that dump trailers themselves are pretty heavy compared to just a eq. trailer.

I would get a weight distribution hitch for it. You really should have one anyway. Curt makes a nice one that is not too hard on the wallet.

Already have one. Picked it up from etrailer. Bought it after hauling a two cord load of red oak which was EYE OPENING. Won't load the trailer without it. Also got a tongue weight scale to ensure that the trailer is properly balanced.
