A dry house is harder to heat, plus it isn't good for your furniture. Wood will split open. doors will shrink and may not latch. I use OAK for the stove and the furnace. Plus my house is tight. Little humidifiers do the the job fairly well.

The console humidifier has the house at approx. 52% right now.

When it comes time, I will use an enameled metal bowl from a double boiler. It is nice and wide so better chance of evaporation since the pellet stove top doesn't get it hot enough to boil.

That's insane!! My dogs would absolutely fear me!! Somewhere around 32-34 % seems to be the start of the static danger zone if I recall.

Don't really have a dryness problem with a few things affecting the condition of the old farmhouse, one being the same as badbob a dirt basement in about 65% of the basement and the second which I am not sure we run a (bogie will know the name) thingamjig for essential oils in the bedroom at night.
When i had the beast of a wood stove going we always have a cast iron pot on top and during sugar season had 3 stainless pots with sap, one which new sap went into so the others did not cool down, second for the always cooking stage and the third being for just about ready for finishing and making syrup . I like the dryness until it becomes uncomfortable.

I do have a couple of weather stations which also monitor the inside . I have run 2 humidifiers one upstairs and one downstairs but now only using the downstairs humidifier. One reason we scaled down is I noticed a lot of build up inside the tubes and housing area that were very hard to get to for cleaning , pretty much had to take the whole thing apart. Last year my entire family got very sick unlike anything we'd experienced and I think it was the contaminated air from the humidifier . So now only one that is easy to clean.

We have been using a floor model Duracraft, cool air humidifier. It puts 3 gal of water into the air daily. Have been using it for about 25 yrs. Any mineral deposits get cleaned out at the end of the heating season. Mold has never been a problem.

There's a 3 gal removable water tank that I refill daily.

It uses 3 beefy wicking panels that the fan draws air across. The wicks get replaced yearly. While I've been able to get replacement wicks, I don't see where the humidifier unit itself is available any more.

We used to have a stove-top cast iron, enamel coated thing, but it left white spots on the stove top.
