I really like the Granberg file and joint . There is a learning curve but The results are fantastic. Not the fastest either. But I feel it does teach you a good understanding of sharpening.

I think I paid less than $10 for my stump vice just by doing a quick search on line. They were everywhere and darned cheap.

I have seen there are many different Dremels available. Which model would be best for sharpening chainsaw chains?

I have a Craftsman set up (like a Dremel) I have the adapter that goes into the power unit. It's about 3 1/2 ft long and you can use it like a pencil. I like it because you have a lot of control! And you can use it for delicate wood carving if you like. It takes all the same attachments as the dremel does.

Good for you man! Its just like anything, takes a little time to get the hang of it. Next thing you know, you wont even need to think about it while you are doing it.

I used a Buffalo grinder chain sharpener for the first time. Seems OK. An older chain sharpened, but I think I need to lower the rakers. A newer chain sharpened just fine. I picked up a husky sharpening kit, with depth gauge and a couple of files. I'll have to see how well they/I do with them.

I got the power care kit it came with raker file and height bar thing and three files ....I took my time and it came out awesome and sharp. Made sure I did every spot the same amount of times and that seemed to do the trick. And made sure I held the file flat and level the whole time and at the proper angle

Here are pics of the granberg's , I like them because you can set the angle and every tooth is filed the same. I have had the hand file since 1978 it still works well. 20170127_160753.jpg 20170127_160932.jpg
I touch up my saw after every tank of gas without the guides then do a good sharpening at the end of the day with the file guide.

I don't think it makes a big difference. I have the Stihl model but they are a bit expensive. My old one gave up the ghost a couple weeks ago and I ended up buying another simply because I could go right to the dealer (a friend) and get one immediately. A bit over $40 if I remember right. Sometimes you can pick up cheaper models as low as $10 but usually more like $15. I've talked to someone who bought a cheapie from Northern Tool and was told it is fine.

Does the grandberg give a better edge than the stihl 2-1?

I never used a stihl 2-1 so I can't answer that. There is a bit of a learning curve with the granberg file. I'm sure the sthil 2-1 is a good quality tool.
