Douglas Fir does have a Strong and Pleasant Fragrance , our neighbors occasionally comment on it when we have a trailer load of fresh cut wood in the driveway, they like it too. Doug
So this may be a dumb question but i just read an article on doug fir and it talked anout it being easy to split because it has no knots. How does a tree have no knots or they just didnt explain it accurately.
Not explained accurately... it depends on the size and age of the tree.. . Knots of course are from branches. Large older trees have their branches up high leaving trunks that are bare but there are still knots inside from when the tree was younger. But the knots are easy to split, small and inconsequential most of the time. It seems most of these articles about firewood on the internet are written by authors who have never actually split a cord of wood and seasoned it in real life— let alone from different species. They just glean the internet as “research” watch a couple YouTube videos and read a few other articles before writing one of their own so they can get clicks. Their actual knowledge and experience is very limited. Same thing we all did in school when writing a research paper. So I take most of it with a grain of salt.
I think that Timber dog hit very close to the Bullseye, all I would add is that, with Doug Fir mid Forest trees will shed their branches as they, and the trees around them grow, due to the surrounding trees blocking the sunlight to the lower branches. Perimeter Trees will still have a full trunk of branches, as they still receive full sunlight, and will have the resulting knots, that can be a PITA to split Where the trees grew can make a huge difference in the knots they have, mid Forest trees can make wonderful telephone poles and firewood, perimeter trees can make for a colorful vocabulary Doug
somehow i missed the follow up posts. Lookin good Timberdog and smelling good too. (i was sniffing my netbook screen trying to smell the splits. Didnt work!) Mebbe we can market FHC logo scented air fresheners. How was it cutting in the snow? None of that stuff for us here yet, but Sunday were getting some.
Hello and welcome to the FHC Husky Man Great to have you join us. Some beautiful country you have there. Some nice firewood as well. Love the "downtown" pic with the snow. Looks like a Christmas card!
Thanks for taking the time to explain that genteman, have a happy friday, the girls are shopping so the little guy and i are having what we call a DUDES DAY!!!! Pics to come of our splitting adventures. Thanks again!!
Thank You Buzz and Cash, it is Beautiful Country where I live, I always joke, that if the Wife calls and asks where I am, if I say that I am Driving through “Downtown “ Brightwood, it takes longer to SAY that I am Driving through Downtown Brightwood, than it does to Actually DRIVE through Downtown Brightwood, but it’s said in Fun, I Truly Love where we Live. Cash, all that I have seen of Colorado is the Denver Airport, and what you can see landing and Taking Off, but I would Really like to see much more of it, I’ve seen some Beautiful pics, that I would like to see in person. Doug
The Denver airport is way out east in the wheat fields. You need to drive west next time you’re here. Colorado is a HUGE state. We have plains as far as you can see to the east and more 14’ers than any other state to the west! Pretty interesting topography here. I didn’t take this pic, but your area makes me think of the San Juan mountain range in southern Colorado. It’s a very beautiful and extremely remote area. The San Juan’s alone are 150 miles long. Lots of Indian folk lore about them hills...
Cash that is Beautiful, and competes very well against anything we have, there are lots of Beautiful places in this Huge Country of our’s, more than I am likely to see in my lifetime, but I want to see as many as I can Oregon is a Very diverse state as well, from the Coast, to the Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge, The Cascade and Blue Mtns and the High Desert, and extensive Wheat Fields here too Doug
Yes, beautiful country indeed. Glad you were able to cross the bad places and get that wood out. Welcome to the club. Lots of great folks here sharing knowledge and humor.
Like you with Colorado, the only part of Oregon that I’ve been to is the Portland airport. My wife and I got a little tipsy on some good craft beers during a quick layover I’d love to see more of it though. Looks like a gorgeous state. My brother actually swam at a beach there last summer. I was shocked that the water is warm enough to swim in!
Cash, please, Please, PLEASE, DON’T base your opinions of Oregon, on what you have seen Portland, Salem (our State Capital)and Eugene, are EMBARRASSING BLIGHTS on an otherwise Beautiful, and Friendly State If your Brother swam at a Coastal Beach, he is one Hardy Soul I personally wouldn’t swim in the Willamette River, due to the “Prominent Populations” of “Brown Trout” and “Toilet Trout” two pretty much indistinguishable species , but that water could very likely be “Warm “, I grew up on the Columbia River, the “Mississippi of the West, which is very tolerable in the Summer. Our Mountain Lakes are Beautiful, but tend to the Chilly side, there are some reservoirs in the High Desert of Central Oregon, that are Popular for Water Sports Here’s a couple pics of a camping trip this Summer, on the Columbia River within view of where my parents had their Boathouse moored when I was growing up. Doug
I see a chazsbetterhalf, “Liking” many of my posts, I’m Gonna go-out on a Limb(Pun Intended) and assume that is Chaz’s Wife? That is Really Cool , My own Wife Loves going out wood cutting, and even WANTED a saw of Her OWN, so for Christmas 2017, she got a Husky 445, with an 18” B&C, I also picked up a 13” B&C so she could learn visualize where that bar tip is, and keep it out of the dirt, or other limbs and what not. She wanted NOTHING to do with that 13” B&C, said that it was EMBARRASSING She Jokes (I HOPE) that She gets our DHT Splitter in the Divorce she likes cutting and splitting, but hasn’t had any interest in the saw forums, but I can live with that, she says that “Saws are Useful “ and “That you can’t have too many saws”, so I think I will keep her around for a while, she not only likes firewooding, but also likes Shooting, Camping, Crabbing and not only handles a Fishing Rod well with a large Chinook on the line, but holds up her end just fine when She is on the Net too. She actually Bought our Boat with Money she made Nights and weekends as a Pampered Chef Consultant , She is Definitely a “Keeper” for her 50th Birthday, in January of 2018, she chose a “Lumber Jill” theme for Her Party, not a theme many of the Gals had ever Tried, but many of them Really Rocked it My Step Daughter, my “Favorite Deckhand “ with a 7 1/2” Dungeness Crab I thought that I had some of her Birthday pics on my phone, guess not , I will have to share those when I get home Doug
Ha ha. My brother said he just saw a nice beach and went for a swim But, we grew up swimming in the Arkansas river here in CO. That water was snow, about a mile before we swam in it! Nothing seems cold after that. To be fair, I’ve really only seen the inside of the airport in Portland. I liked the beer and carpet I do see Portland making the news for political reasons a lot - which does seem embarrassing. I would like to road trip out there to camp and ride my mountain bike sometime. Some good friends of mine did that last summer and LOVED it. I generally steer clear of the cities anyway
That's cool, you have the Northwest Queen of your woodyard and I have the Southeast Queen of my woodyard. My hunny helps me with all our jobs, whether grass cutting, woodcutting...she loves to hunt and fish also. I got her a MS180 with 16" B&C earlier this year to learn on. It sure is nice when we have a partner that enjoys being outside with us. Check out these couple threads... Definitely a KEEPER, My HUNNY Git'ter done down in Dixie
Dayum, I believe that I owe Timber dog, the Thread OP, a Big Apology for some Serious Thread Drift I’m SORRY Timber dog I do Hope that you “Enjoyed the Ride” any way, even if it went a “Bit” Off Course Doug
Ive never been out West Husky Man or Cash Larue . Some picturesque country to say the least. This pic is view from Mohawk mountain (elavation 1600') in the NW hills of Connecticut. Thats Ms. buZZsaw with a view to the NW. Pic from Oct. 23, her birthday. Second pic views to the SE. There is a ski area there as well. A five minute ride off the main road to the top. (I was going to say summit, but the mountains here are like pimples compared to what you guys have!) We went up to see foliage.
