I'd love to have a donkey as a livestock guardian. They are Bad@sses! http://www.wideopenspaces.com/buck-donkey-doesnt-take-crap-coyotes/
He's 2 and a few months. Yes he will calm down soon. Right now he is sawing logs on the couch. He is a really good dog. When somebody new comes over he likes to jump. He's 140 pounds. That's my only beef. He means no harm, but he's a lot of love for some.
As you know. That is a big no no with large dogs. Hope you can train and cure him of that. So he doesn't hurt anyone unintentionally. He is awesome!
We have an underground fence, of course most of the time now I don't bother with his collar he does not test the boundaries even if the neighbor dogs are out. Our first Aussie never chased cars but he would chase me on the atv. They train well so I would think you would be fine.
I know everyone loves labs on here but have you thought of a German Shepherd. The ones we had were so good with the family and protective of the yard. They do need a defined area to patrol and they do shed constantly. This is Romeo (130 lbs) and Juliette (75 lbs) They were brother and sister team that patrolled our yard.
That's because nowadays mutts are "designer breeds" My favorite dog I've had was a Siberian husky, but unless you want an incredible amount of hair on everything then I wouldn't recommend one. I'll throw my vote in for a retriever, either a lab or a golden. Great dogs!
GSD are heading dogs also in short they need a job and really a 1 person dog.. FYI major hip displaSai because of irresponsible breeders get hips xrayed before ya fall in love
Beautiful all around dogs. And I have decided I will own one someday. Probably after I retire. Maybe a Shiloh Sheppard. I almost bought one the last time it was time for a dog. But wife wanted something a little smaller for her and the kids this time. And the lab/husky mix have been great. Not to mention the easier to clean shorter hair. I have seen some very nice looking and temperament Shepard mixes as well. Someday.......
Yes, there is that. We looked for dogs that had straight backs and no sloping hip line. The show requirements have really skewed the breeds durability.
Used to, he just recently passed. Had him 7 years! Hardest (and most rewarding) animal I have ever raised. No BSing him and he was too smart to trick or lie to. It's like when dogs know you are going for a walk, this guy knew when you were going to do anything. Physical force wouldn't work because I would loose!
Mine probably had a bad trainer...LOL I hope she lives to be 17, I have about 10K into her ACL'S She will roll in any poop except other dog poop!
That's cool, just curious who came first the squirrel or the dogs? Getting adult dogs to accept a squirrel sounds like it would be near unpossible...I know it would be in this house.
mine accepts 4lb rabbit! I will try to get a pic.. that's mommies rabbit... lady.. GSD... won't touch it and runs to be protected from it.. funny as all get out 70 lb sheppard trying to hide from 4lb rabbit got a pic somewhere of them both eating dog food out of dog bowl
