I just collect sticks and small branches that fall during the year. A hand full usually gets the job done of catching small splits or loose bark on fire. Sent from my XT1030 using Tapatalk
My father does a lot of woodworking so he bags up his scrap wood for me as kindling. I also have a fair amount of slabs that come of the sawmill and practically heated my home all winter on that this year. It needs tending a lot more often, and hemlock (the kind I used) burns hot, but we are always around and I have a super-insulated house so it works well.
I picked up a couple of of netted laundry bags and stuffed them with the log splitter left overs. Got them hanging on a tree to dry out and see how this works out for kindling.
I just use bark and scraps left over from splitting. I've already collected for next winter so it's good and dry. Like Butcher I don't want to have to pay for any firestarter.
I don't mind paying for the firestarters. I have been using these and have never paid more than $1 a box for them. Easy, clean storage, time savers. I usually break them in half...so thats 16 fires per box. But I will still continue using white cedar for kindling.....just not use it so much any longer.
I use the safe lite by rutland 24 in a box and I cut them in half so end up with 48 starts for $3.79 at the hardware store not bad in my book.
Thanks Ben, I also use the fire starters from Duraflame which I love, but I figure if I can toss a couple of these scraps into the fire place to get me going I'll be good to go. I plan on picking up a couple more of these netted laundry bags soon, you can produce a lot of scrap while splitting, lol
Oh, I forgot. Ruger brings me kindling all the time too. This is about a months worth. That I had to pick up out of the yard before I could mow. Yes...he had my scabbard too...
Are pine cones kindling? They're all over the ground right outside the house. I gather them in the heat of the summer and store them dry. One or two and a quick blast from the torch. Voila!
My school has a fee trees that produce them. Sizs of an egg or so. I should think about collecting a few and trying them out. Ive just had a lot of other stuff to use for a long time.
I haven't used kindling since I started burning dry wood. I do use a few full size firewood splits to get the fire pit going.
