Does anyone cut most of their logs to a different length than 16"? Why, or why not?

I'm running 18" splits. My firebox is 20x22", so I could go bigger, but I like having the option of running N/S and E/W depending on how cold it is. I originally ran 20" splits, but it didn't give me enough wiggle room in the N/S direction with the door.

I just eyeball things and most of it works. Screenshot_20210505-100540_Google.jpg We do so much camping and fires are religion there, that a lot of the uglies and anything that is long or since I hand split anything that is gnarly evil twisted goes in the camp firewood pile. I'd bet camping burns up 1 1/2-2 cord of fugly stuff every year. When the opportunity comes and I get rounds of stuff delivered by friends and neighbors that I might wood snob if for a wood stove it is gladly taken and goes to the camp pile and many times it is cut very haphazardly.

I suspect my lengths average 17", which fits well in our stove (can accommodate 20", but 18" is really the practical maximum. I don't precisely measure cuts, and I suspect that I get closer to 16" with one saw and closer to 18" with the other saw just because of where my rough reference points are on each saw. Works good tho!

It is good to have the wood around 2" or so shorter than will fit, which gives room for air all around the wood.

    1. 16" is easier to measure stacks when selling. ( We can't legally sell ricks, face cords or truckloads)
    2. What the customer says. "We like how your wood is uniform and we don't have to fight to get it in the stove".
    3. And last but not least. Dad said so!!

You can't sell wood by the truckload, even if you tell the customer what make/model and size truckbed you have? Is that a state law?

Yes state law. Cords or fractions of a cord OR cubic feet. Of course no one does it. About the only time the state gets involved is if there is a complaint.

Like others I cut most at 16 inches , wood furnace in the garage will take longer but the stove in the house 16 inch is perfect. I also like the math that 3 rows of 16 equals 4 feet so counting cords is easier.
I used to just eyeball but since hanging around with BRAD ( yeah you know that guy ) I have gotten pretty faithful at actually marking before cutting and when stacked it really does look nice and neat so to me it is well worth the little extra effort.

I'm the shorty guy here I guess. My furnace downstairs is only 14" between the fire bricks whether it's NS or EW. Most of the time I have to set the pieces down onto the coals between those bricks so I don't have a choice.
I'd like to leave them longer but don't plan on buying a new furnace just to be able to do so.

Same here, only I cut to 20" for a 22" max firebox...also dislike dealing with 16" stuff.
