Here’s a neat animation of the variation across the western NE region’s summer’s moisture. Doesn’t reach down to the PA inundation, and chops off much of Maine, ... https://vtdigger.org/2018/10/11/drought-continues-plague-northern-vermont-leaving-farms-wells-dry/
I've always stacked 3 deep and really have not had a problem. Usually it's just chunks and uglies in the middle. With a top cover. I'll be ok. Just a little disappointed. I let it rip this morning and had no problem getting up to 575-600 before dampering down. I just got to keep the draft open a little longer at the beginning. Glass isn't getting black and chimney is a nice heat signature. The way most people around here burn the smoke is rolling. I don't roll like that. I just notice it's a little different this year and when your so used to one way and there's a slight difference it gets me uptight.
Yep. What surprised me is even though we didn’t have rain, we didn’t have as Many Fires as BC/ Canada had. That was a mess. Most were centralized but for nearly 2 weeks breathing that kinda air is tiring.
I think you’re just paying good attention to detail but for what its worth, you had this wood stacked up for quite some time so with humidity and all that, you could be burning way worse. I’m not experienced as much as the rest of all of you but the CSS and top cover mantra around here is what’s best, if you can’t beat the other variables, it’s not your fault. The drying inside has pros and cons, personally, I prefer not to anymore because of the mess but as long as the wood is clean or you stuff in a leak tight bin, you’re good.
Yeah we were dry.. First time in 15 years parts of lawn died for lack of water.. Most rain was south of me.. Hard time complaining when PA was flooding.
I had the same issue yesterday. I put in two extra pieces and a few minutes later she was cooking. Took a few minutes to get a solid draft but the wood was a little wet. I have a bin full of shorties and uglies I am starting with.
I'm glad I checked this thread if only to mitigate my own disappointment. I don't think it's cold enough to burn yet but my son is complaining about the house being cold so, OK. I'll give it a test run. What I'm burning now has been on the front porch so, out of the rain but, yeah, the humidity.
I'm in the same boat. Some three year old stuff in the stove this morning . Hissing like mad. Too much recent rain. This is even under a south facing roof.
