If you do not have the storage space, cant afford to make it or some combo there of, I get that. All of my stuff is garage kept and it does take up some serious space, but all of my stuff starts with a pull or two and works and looks like it did the first week. I did the tarp thing when I had to several years ago, and the condensation and bees and other items just made it a mess.

While not ideal, I understand why you'd leave it outside. A long time ago I was at a buddy's girlfriend's grandparents farm and noticed an old splitter sitting outside like that under a ratty tarp. I asked if they'd sell it and was told if I could get it started I could borrow it until someone in the family asked for it back. Apparently it had sat there for 15 years unused after her grandfather passed. Other than the normal stuff (cleaning the carb, new tires and fluids and a new fuel line) the only thing wrong was the inside of the gas tank was really rusty. I just used ball bearing to knock off what I could and coated the interior with epoxy and had a free log splitter for a couple years. So, yeah, it'll be fine out there.

Mine sits outside with a tarp over the entire thing. I see no reason for it to be inside. I use it here and there about every other week in the spring, summer, and fall. Too much work to dig it out and put it away that often. Its just a tool. I've got way more valuable items that need to be in my limited garage space.

Hydraulic hoses are relatively benign, especially if they were to suffer a sudden failure. Compressed air at @100psi stores way more energy than hydraulic oil at 3000psi in a pipe or hose.

My splitter sits outside with a cover over the entire thing ,except the tires .
No room inside , other things in pole barn and shed.
I think it's fine outside , I kept my electric splitter outside outside too, completely covered.
When I'm ready to split , pull the cover and go at it :axe:

DHT 27 ton owner here. Its been a great spliier for me. I did have a leak on the valve because the guy at Lowes didnt use any teflon tape. So a quick adjustment, a little teflon tape, and I was back in business. Mine has the Kohler 6.5 hp and it does great. Oh and it sits outsidw under my deck behind one of m woodstacks covered up. I honestly do not think anyone would be disappointes in owning a DHT. As a matter of fact, my father in law bought a DHT 28 ton yesterday at Lowes. I cant say enough good thigs about mine.

I have the DHT 22 ton. Had it two years now with no problems. Went through the fittings and took them all apart, put back together with rector seal and tightened everything up. There are some people at lowes who are with it but I'm sure mine was put together by some 18 year old who could of cared less. Nothing was tight. Basically stole mine, walked out after taxes for 724.00.

I by no means am a pro but I was told by a friend who's a heavy equipment mechanic not to use teflon tape on hydraulics. He said something about it clogging up. Not sure? I used a jar of some liquid stuff he gave me, rector seal.

They had that stuff all over the fittings, but it still didnt help. Im not a pro either, but i believe that if you make sure none of the tape gets into the system then it will be ok. I made sure none of it got to close to the fitting ends so that there wasnt a chance of it getting into the fluid. I will see how it goes, but so far so good.

Another DHT 22 ton owner here. I've owned it three years and between me and my buddy I used to split wood with its done around 30 cords. I did have a small leak in a fitting as well tightened it up never missed a beat since. I agree with other in there are definitely better machines but for what my needs are it works.

Same here did not have time for processing wood this year, work got in the way but I have put an easy 50 cords through it without a single issue what so ever. This was my average wood pile spit by the Ariens each year

If you are nice and neat with it then you have little to worry about. But for most of the high pressure connections it's totally unnecessary. They are likely going to be flare fittings or flat face o-rings and do not seal at the threads anyways. On a tapered pipe thread fitting the tape would work fine but I also prefer a liquid sealant to the tape. One tiny piece of that tape gets hung up in the wrong place in a system, it can mean big $$$$ to diagnose, tear down, clean out, and reassemble. Plus an o-ring/seal kit for some items is not always cheap either. This isn't much of a concern on a simple machine like a log-splitter but on a big wheel loader, dozer, excavator, backhoe, etc it's a whole lotta money for a $0.0001 piece of tape.

I am reading this and thinking of a car restoration show I saw the other day where they were telling you to put Teflon tape onto the nut fitting on a master cylinder:picard:
    Totally unnecessary won't do anything:picard:

Kinda like taping up the threads of a pipe union.
