True that, there is also the mentality that something is bought for a one time job and then put on the shelf until they realize to turn it back into a little money.

Reminds me of a guy that was on a snowshoeing event we attended last winter.
First off, they guy and his wife are hard to take, everything evolves around them and their success type of personalities. I find it very hard to stay silent and usually just distant myself from the two of them.
Anyway, he was so proud with the fact that he wore a red and black flannel shirt and looked "lumberjacky"!

Kind of guy that if he bought a chain saw, you just know that there would be an accident involved in the near future.

I hear ya. Though like most other skills it takes years of experience & practice to get good at something. Not just size or brute strength, its technique also. Case in point - I'm not a big guy,5'7" & 170ish but very strong for my size & pretty agile for my age.Had my now 24 year old nephew help me a few years back splitting some stuff also. He's 6 foot, close to 300 pounds & a State champion powerlifter & competes several times a year in regional Strongman competitions. His personal best is something like 865 pounds deadlift or whatever. :hair: At the time no matter what he just couldn't split those big rounds (think they were Silver Maple with a few knots/cross grain marginal but not the worst you'd find of course...)

Wasn't super easy for me either, but soon they busted open & I was done with that job.He just looked at the pile & said "Damm Uncle Jon,how'd you get through those like that? :emb:" Of course it didn't hurt that I've been felling/bucking/splitting/stacking etc since I was 17 years old & I was then in my mid 40's.Worked for a small local tree service in late teens/early 20's at first also,so that really helped me stay on course..

Now that's a good use of a decomp valve. It's dweeb's like these lumbersexuals that stihl put a decomp valve on the ms241. A 42cc saw my 7 year old can start without the decomp valve.

Of course they would need a map, a fancy youhootube video, and a snapchat with tech support to find and use it. They would probably invariably make the comical mistake of pushing it while the saw was running:picard:too!

Never had a reason to push the decomp while running. Whats it do? :binoculars:

You know I'm gonna go do it to my 241 now just to see...;)

Slap that finger good. Watched my wife's worthless cousins do it on my 7910. He came over to borrow a saw. I sent him away with the a ms 180 I keep for just that purpose.

I'd put him in the lumbersexual club. I hapened to have the 7910 in my hands so i showed him how to start it up. The fool bends down and pushes the decomp valve shortly after I started it. Didn't even ask what the heck it was just pushed it. Pretty funny watching him shake his hand all over the place! Thats when i decided he was getting the loaner saw. I had to send the saw with premixed gas and instructions for him to either bring it back when the can was empty or buy true fuel. I'm all for helping family out, but sometimes I swear.:headbang:

I never tried it on any saw. Always kind of wondered if they had a safety feature to keep that from hapening. Or if you would be able to overcome compression and push it in while running. I decided it was a bad idea. Thank goodness for a Darwin award winner to confirm my suspicions.

Rule #1: NEVER lend out a chainsaw! Unless you like getting back a chainsaw with a worn out, stretched chain!

What can I say I'm a generous guy normally. Give you the shirt off my back or my last dollar in my pocket. With that being said I told him the rental price on the saw was a new chain when he returns it.

Just a counterpoint, I know a lot of young guys who work hard, think well, and know how to use tools (or really want to learn). (I teach in a technical field, so that skews what I see.) Several of them want to come to my place a chop wood for me :D. I am trying to figure out how to get them to pay me for the privilege of doing it :D:D.

    Hope is not totally lost.

Tell them no electronic devices allowed and see how many still want to attend.

This subject hits home for me a bit. I don't have any kids currently and prospects of such get slimmer as each year passes. This leaves me with a dilemma as far as what to do with my beloved forest when the time comes. I have just two prospects at the moment as far as family goes. A nephew who is 23 and has thus far failed miserably to impress me with any kind of desire to be a steward of the land. He's been getting better in the past few years as far as becoming a man, but still is never around when there are chores to be done. I know he would help if I asked, but that is not the kind of personality needed to be a good steward...you have to want to do it. Prospect #2 is one of my younger cousins. His parents have a small farm and some livestock, so I know he's had his hands dirty plenty of times. He is also pretty heavy into hunting, which would give him some form of appreciation of woodlands. He is just 19 right now though and pretty headstrong/cocksure which doesn't fly with me too well. Perhaps he'll come around. Right now, neither of them "can see the forest for the trees" which has me concerned. I may not have what I consider to be a worthy heir to entrust the land to.
