Nice 'Stroke! If you are interested in a lil boost, here is an inexpensive "tuner" that plugs in and has stock, high idle, 50, 75, 100, 140 HP settings with the just twist of a knob. I know several people that have them and like them a lot. TS Performance Switchable 6 Position Chip - 7.3L Powerstroke
You should have heard the straight exhaust in the Bronco when I first built it. Being so short made it sound different than most 7.3's. It was loud, and sounded like it actually had power behind it, not just a stock unchipped engine! It was too loud, and the drone in the cab was unbearable though. I put a 30" FTE resonator on it to kill the drone. Still sounds great when you get into the loud part of the pedal too.
"Turbine muffler" I actually prefer a muffler. Especially on the inline 6's. They don't really sound good and throaty.
I heard what must have been a v6 Camaro yesterday. Must have had a straight exhaust on it. Worst sound i ever heard coming from a vehicle exhaust! It was just barely moving and kakkling like a four cylinder with a soup can muffler...horrible!!!
Be careful running a tuner if you have an auto trans. Alot of them Jack the line pressure up to firm up the shifts and it's hard on the trans. Also stock injectors will only be happy up to the 75hp tune most likely.
My truck has the stock exhaust with the muffler cut out by the PO. Its loud and will most likely be replaced with an aftermarket unit with a muffler.
Both of mine were the same way. The '01 was really annoying with 3" pipe and no muffler. I put a 4" banks system it with a small muffler. It sounds better. The '07.5 is straight pipe but doesn't seem bad. Some day it'll get a new system with a small muffler also. No hurry...
Bought a Riff Raff 6637 filter kit for my 2001 f250. Along with the muffler delete, it’s louder but not obnoxious. Also not my daily driver, but wife didn’t complain on a 60 mile wood delivery. Also did the infamous clock spring on same rig. Pita but doable, managed to fix the horn, cruise and airbag, but dorked up the blinker auto off. Doh. Also horn sounds wimpy, so the airhorns might need to go in.
Looking at a new f350 dually lariat black widow. Hard to say if I can get the numbers to work, but it’s worth a shot.
I partially agree. Turbo application is funny in that the air gets hot anyway, so under hood temps with or without an airbox don’t make much difference. I always used methanol spray to cool anyways on my last rig. In a race situation it would make a difference but day to day driving and towing at 55mph, I doubt the heat will outweight the benefit of a larger filter. I do think a housing is better and plan to build one, but likely won’t do much. As long as you have a space from the grill to bring in fresh air, it should be fine. I have had both in turno and NA applications. Ymmv
Lots of guys run that filter setup. That air has to go through the intercooler befor it gets to the motor. EGTs will be lower with the big open filter compared to stock. Just my thoughts on the subject
