I've been saving the bigger pieces of bark from mine. Burns hot and last decent, for bark. It all adds up.
Thread bump. Close enough to the same spot to call this a continuation scrounge. Species trio today. Mostly chestnut oak with some regular white and red thrown in. Biggest load I’ve had in here for a while. GMC killed and standing dead for several years, cut last year and pushed up away from the road. The pictures don’t do it justice just how steep that bank is
Before I started cutting today, in my mind’s eye I pictured myself quartering the large rounds on the hill, giving them a nudge and watching them cartwheel down to the truck. Turns out after carrying the smaller ones down the hill, I didn’t have the steam to swing the maul (but somehow had enough to heft the big ones into the truck) My pile of rounds ready to be split is growing. There’s a couple larger red oak rounds off on the far right side, then the rest is white and chestnut oak. Not bad for a couple Colorado-sized loads.
I personally blame you for these dead oak scores as of late Seeing you go after all that nice chestnut oak has me FOMO-ing like you wouldn’t believe. For a while there I didn’t even want to touch the dead stuff, but… why not? Especially since it dries faster than live cut
The only negative is the mess the bark and rotting sap wood leaves. Looks like you're able to get most of the bark off so that's a plus. Those were some big rounds to be heaving up in the truck. Back breakers! I'm sure it would be easy to whack 'em with a maul but I'd just as soon pull the trigger.

Oh the joys of roadside scrounging. Hope you had snowshoes and couple ski poles for that embankment. It was cold but serene in the snow today. Nice job Eric. Those are some primo rounds!
It was only 17 degrees when I left work at 11am to hit this score. It felt great working outside in that temperature though. The snow had just started as I was pulling up. By the time I packed up to leave, the squall had intensified and visibility was low Made it the 30 miles home without issue though. Now I’m itching to get the rest! I plan on getting another load next weekend. My coworker might tag along too.
I didnt know there was load size requirements for the FHC? Yeah it is nice to get a good load. Somehow it just doesnt feel right to me unless the truck is overflowing with wood!
Heeeeheeeheee.... elll yeah. I don't think there's much to beat than standing dead wood in general. Some have just been rough on saws in the past so it takes a bit more to get through 'em. You make this look easy Eric, even with those big rounds.
I think it might be high time I start splitting and stacking, and take a break from all the fun I’ve been having cutting. * Just one more load (or two) *
