Gotra love being able to just pull up with the truck and cut a load and go. I have access to an endless amount of ash that's dead. It's just a bit of an operation to get into the woods with him to cut. We don't have it set up so that I could just drive my truck and trailer down and grab a load on my own. Not yet at least. At some point, all this good ash, won't be good anymore when it's out in the elements. Until then, hoard on!!!
A standing dead red oak fell roadside on Monday during the windstorm. Today I grabbed a quick load. This will go straight to my uncle and he’ll add it to next year’s stacks. Plenty more there for future scrounging when time permits.
I love getting petrified oak. You just know it’s gonna make perfect splits and burn hot. I have my eye on a few dead standing barkless oaks, but they are not as big as that one.
There's a glut of standing dead oaks in the woods near my work, all moth-killed. Kind of sad to see, but it makes for easy scrounging. Every year more and more fall down. I think they burn better than a live tree cut, stacked and dried accordingly.
That’s some nice solid old oak. Looks pretty dry too considering how wet it’s been this year. Nice score. Good thing you got to it before Brad LOL
That's the biggest reason for me to hoard oak; it's a safe bet. Brad wouldn't touch it if it was cut, split, kiln dried and loaded into his truck
maybe if you restack it for him too? With any luck I’ll have bad Brad drooling in a few hours,,,,,,stay tuned
I think a couple smaller pieces were dry, but most of it was pretty wet in the center surprisingly. By next winter it should all be good to go though.
3/4 load of dead red oak. The rest of this particular trunk is getting bad towards the base so on to the next one.
Back at it with a few rounds of dead/down/barkless red oak. Grandpa’s old 61 did the cutting today with the new 18” small mount bar I butchered up to work on this large mount saw. It oils and works perfectly I’ll probably grab a few more rounds from this spot later this evening.
Not exactly dead, but this tree was down anyway. 7 more rounds from the same location last night. I believe these are scarlet oak, but it could be a red/black hybrid. For firewood purposes it’s red oak either way. My pile waiting to be split/stacked is growing steadily:
