It is a wood burning fireplace. We just don't know if it is still safe to use as one

Do all the stockings hanging indicate children? My father built a fire almost every Christmas, what a treat, special memories for their kids :) Get the chimney swept to rule out creosote buildup or birds nests or whatever. Preheat the chimney before lighting the fire (rolled up newspaper held up past the damper, heard of guys using torches here), And go for it! I've done with and without a grate, grate keeps logs from rolling out. The screen Stinny mentioned for sure, make sure it's fine enough weave for a spark guard, the looks like carpet infront of her hearth.

Also there was a really neat gadget years ago, a grate made from tubes that could blow some heat when the fire gets hot. The name escapes me. Fun ideas for Christmas gifts if she's interested :)

Definitely needs a screen in front, we always had andirons growing up.
Glad they are happy together. Our SIL has little mechanical ability by himself, but he helped and watched me put brakes on their car, I did one side, handled him the tools and said " next side is yours" ..I watched, he did a good job on it. He also helped me put together a trampoline and swing the other day. Just have to work with them sometimes

Yep, kids.......youngest is 15 this year. Oldest is 24.
I plan to pull the insulation and with a high beam flashlight, get a good look up the flue. Won't tell much about the shape of the liner material, but I'll know if there are any blockages.
They have a couple hair dryers, so those will hopefully do the "preheat".
I'll have to find out if there's a screen somewhere. Maybe in the garage.

Could rent on of those sewer inspection camera units and run it up the flue for a better look see. Ya I know they make ones for chimneys but chances are a rental place might have the sewer type vs the flue type.

Or for a little bit more money you could pay a pro with a camera who knows what they are looking for to do a full inspection.
