I don't think that I posted this but if I did....here it is again. We have two big ole white pine being brought down by a tree service starting on Monday so we should have plenty of chips.

This is the worst of the two and is near the lower part of the driveway and could hit the garage so it will be nice when it gets done on Monday.

Since we're taking down a bunch of pine where the garage is going which will give us two or three years worth of shoulder wood, should I let him truck away the logs to the dump or keep them for more firewood?

The split tops are good to get down. Moisture sits in the crotches and decays the wood over time leaving those trees far more susceptible to storm damage.

Save every last bit right down to the very last needle.
    LOL

It chips up easier green. I'd let them chip as big as they can and then firewood the rest unless they know someone that will come and get it to mill.
My plans for pine down is to keep the straight ones for milling and firewood the crooked and small ones. I have to strip the bark on the good sized ones or they get full of beetle grubs.

Personally I'd keep it all. I like to mix pine in with my stacks to either reduce a heavy coal bed, or provide a quick fire if the coals are very low. Either way it's useful. I won't chip anything over 4" diameter unless it's really gnarly or loaded with little branches. Makes for great maple evaporator firewood too.

Keep it all and burn it.It is free and if cut down close to house just think how quick you can cut it up without going into the woods.

Get rid of it. It causes chimney fires.

We're having two big trees taken down so that would give us 4-5 years of shoulder season wood along with the shoulder season wood we have for this fall. We also have about two years of pine rounds that are ready to be split, I need more room for stacking if we keep the wood which would mean felling more pine! :hair:

I did talk with the guy who's doing the job today, he did tell me the place that he had planned to dump it was a guy who would use it for heat (works for the town we live in) that won't happen so I guess we'll fell more pine so we have room for stacking more pine!

Tree number one that is coming down will make the lower driveway and the garage a much safer place and tree number two that's coming down will give the house more sun, all good things.

I'd definitely be keeping it all.

    It's money in the bank.

Once it's on the ground, makes it easier to decide?

All you need now is a small band sawmill!

I would be inclined to keep it unless I knew someone who needed and and was willing to come get it. Never hurts to help someone who is willing to help as well. Good to get the pine gone. We have so much pine around here. It is not good to have anything under it, or near where it can fall on. Every year, there are sizeable limbs under the pines. Seldom ever see a mature white pine without lots of broken limbs. Ever see one hit by lightning. They can explode. Had one get hit at a campground we were staying at. New truck about 50 ft away got a lot of damage from falling limbs when one of the pines got a lightning strike. Whole thing was too damm close for comfort.

The person who would've been getting the pine doesn't need it, they've been taking all the pine from the clearing going on around all the new power lines. I've been for rides up that road and they have plenty.

Most people in this area still think only bad things will happen when you burn pine.

Will there be a wood fired shop heater in the garage?
