cut some GREEN at this St. Paddys Day score

That looks like it could have taken out more than one chain.

 

Yes I have. I had just filed my chain the night before and first cut sliced a nail lengthwise. All I could think was "Man, someone needs to take my files away from me cuz I sure did a crappy job sharpening this thing." After making the cut and seeing the nail I knew what happened and sharpened the chain. After a couple of sharpenings it was back to normal and used that chain for almost a year till it got down to the wear bars.

 

If i cut it it Mag Craft & MAF143 it didnt dull the chain unless it was the last cut i made. There a chance that cut was the end of one of the tree services cuts, but the metal wouldve rusted since logs have been there a couple weeks already and rained on??? Maybe its aluminum?
Chain being used is some cheap semi chisel Stens brand i think.
Kinda has me puzzled.

 

The one I hit was while I was felling the tree on the first cut making the notch. It was a Stihl full chisel and it took the tips back pretty good and when I sharpened it I kinda just went halfway a couple times and used it some with it "half sharp". It probably took 35 strokes with the file total per tooth to get the tips back where they were truly sharp again. Semi chisel wouldn't have the tips that get destroyed easily when you hit metal but it still dulls them. I use semi chisel on my 250 cuz I work in fence rows a lot and cut a lot of smaller brush and it seems to hold up much better in that type of duty for me. I only run Stihl chains anymore cuz they seem to hold up a little better. I usually touch up the chains at least every other tank of gas. I like keeping them really sharp to make the work go a little quicker. I hate throwing dust...



Just about positive it was one of the framers popped one in the tree when they were putting the house up in '07. I can't believe we never noticed it for 10 years as the tree grew around it. I walked by there almost every day... I sure found it when I cut it down!!!

 

Typically hitting a piece of metal like that would have bent the corner of the cutter down and of course it would dull the crap out of the edge. Unless like you said a softer metal. I have hit bullets before and never affect the chain.

I don't think it's aluminum, you probably didn't notice it much because you were using semi chisel chain.

Planned on coming home by the score. Stopped and bucked the rest of the ash. Couple bigger logs on the embankment so i parked in the yard then the road. 20 minutes cut and load with the 028. Some nice wood. Love to find more ash like this.
Only the dead mystery wood left. Undecided if ill go back. 15 minutes from home.

That lil F150 is apparently one tough mudder though!
