I didn't exactly want to spend time building a baffled/chambered muffler...
    if something was available.

I thought there'd be another 18-24hp muffler that i could adapt. And save time...

    Kohler command 20. 1996-ish.
    Horizontal shaft.
Shame they made the muffler out of a soup can.

Around the GTG campfire, a few things can bend, break, or tear. Camp chairs mostly.

I'd be looking for something with the same/close 'nuff inlet/outlet locations and just graft your piping onto that. Or just bend up some zoomies and run a couple Vance & Hines down the side of the hood....

It's likely Kohler had little to do with that muffler and it was supplied by Troy-Bilt. After MTD took over, they weren't real concerned about long-term service parts availability. Or even supporting legacy models. They wanted the name to market equipment in the big-boxes.

With ALL of these mufflers, the pounding of the exhaust pulses eventually breaks the baffles and loosens the crimped caps. The baffles disintegrate further and fertilize the lawn. The caps just flap around like one of those cymbal monkey toys until it blows off and the whole 'hood knows you lost the muffler.

    Ok. Kohler command ch20s.

Maybe buy a muffler like this and use your old header pipes to weld onto the new muffler? This one has an end exit. Is there room to have the exhaust exit the side?

Here's a center exit Goodall 280-873 Kohler 20 Horsepower Muffler Goodall 900 Series

    Another center exit

    And another
Kohler Muffler Kit Center Straight Side 24 786 04S | Kohler Replacement Muffler Kit Center Straight Side | 2478604S

Yeah, looks like you'll have to do some cutting and welding.

I guarantee Kohler had pretty much nothing to do with the muffler, that was MTD's cost reduction after they bought troy built, which your model was really a mid sized bolens.

Yeah, looking back, i might have went a different route. Dad had 2 bolens tractors. One from the 70's and one from the 80's. Both solid machines. So when it was time i traded the bolens at the dealer knowing this was a bolens design built by TB. It's a solid machine also, but the parts dried up fast with mtd.
Guess i shoulda bought a john deere. At least there'd still be parts available.

For a few decades anyways. Some stuff from my favorite vintage toys is drying up.

With Deere, there's always one out behind someone's barn you can rob parts off of too.:rofl:
