Crumbling catalytic combustor

6-1/2 to 7 months of 24/7 burning per bur season.

It was lighting off fine , with the center section slid forward .
Maybe should have left it alone, was whole & working until I removed it

My take is the same as Dennis's,
I prefer the metal ones after this experience.

One of the normal maintenance items for a cat stove
to get the clean , long, efficient burns.
1 for R & R every 3 years is not bad.

 

That was my thought. Some times we just can't leave well enough alone!

No rush, the stove is working fine with the original SS one.
Need to go to the stove store & kick the tires on some of the new models anyway.

 

The "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" motto.
Just don't fit into an old maintenance man's way of doing things.

 

But we'll miss the pictures of that stove you can park a Cadillac in if you get something new.

Huh. I have first-batchers in my Ks and BIL's Fv, and as long as the stove's up to temp, they light almost instantly. I've also got a first-batcher in SIL's Fireview. It's covered in green deposits that didn't simmer off when I cleaned it, and I think that one will light off right away, too....I'll see this week as I'll be running her stove....
Dennis, does the new style look any different than the original steel?

 

Woody I installed a new style SS cat recently. It looks very different. I should have took pics.

It has a SS frame on it, doesnt use your old cast iron cat frame but needs the shipping bolts to hold it down for a good seal, it is very light. Each cell is perfectly shaped. So far I love mine. Instant light off and consistent bright orange glow for hours.
