Critical Chrome Update Scam

Anyone have this happen ?
A page popped up and said Critical Chrome Update and had a download now button , well I knew it was probably bull ,so I just closed the window .
Apparently I have browser hijacker I have to get rid of some how.
Apparently Norton doesn't detect this kind of crap.

 

I've had the same thing in the past...I always do like you, either close the page or force a shutdown if the page won't close. Only updates allowed are the automatic ones that are already setup or the ones I go looking for...if they come looking for me I nix 'em. Good policy Grizzly Adam ?

 

Yep. And as a rule of thumb companies don't like to call things critical. Microsoft does or at least has done this with some updates but they are the only one that I know of.

 

I run PC Matic. That does the updates except for what windows 10 does all on its own. I also run PC Scan and Repair. They seem to take care of most issues. I try not to open anything I don't recognize.

 

The ones I hate most are pop ups claiming "Virus has been detected!" and then a button you're supposed to click to FIX THIS NOW.
C'mon - really?

 

Yeah, I don't click on anything that randomly pops up

 

I hope this isn't an email that you had to open. Disable your cookies and you might not get the pop ups. Just opening an email can do major harm and plant unwanted malware and cookies.

 

Cookies do not affect popups and are how websites recognize you. This site uses cookies and without them you won't stay logged in.

 

Will windows defender detect malware?

 

Its supposed to, but I dont know how good it is. I use Linux.

 

A popup blocker is a good add-on to consider.

I got an email that had my brother's name on it but it was not his email address, all that was in it was a link, I immediately deleted it, he never sends me e-mail without saying Hi how are you doing ,he did not send it
