    I wonder about his climate too, how it differs in getting/drying/burning wood there.

    Yeah those are used in masonry chimneys IIRC.

    If he is burning wet wood the flue temps still come into play, smoldering dry wood in a stove produces creosote also.

    Having rebuilt my own masonry chimney five years ago (from just above the fire box) I can tell you that the chains will do nothing but damage an ordinary Terra cotta liner. They are actually pretty fragile and refractory cement is terribly soft.
